Chapter 9 - The Neonatal Ward

The sharp siren of the Code Silver wailed through the corridors, accompanied by the flashing amber strobes of the hospital’s automated emergency grid. Heavy magnetic fire doors began slamming shut along the hallway, sealing each wing into self-contained quarantine sectors.

"They're closing the floors," Julian said, his mind snapping into tactical clarity. "Evelyn owns the security firm that manages this hospital's network. She isn't calling the city police—she's sending her private retrieval team to contain us."

Clara struggled to sit up, groaning as she pulled the IV lines from her forearms, leaving small dots of blood that welled on her skin. "Julian, we can't leave without our daughter. If they secure this building, she’s lost."

Julian moved to the wall cabinet, pulling down a wheelchair and unfolding it with a metallic snap. He helped Clara into the seat, wrapping her in a heavy medical blanket. "Hold on to me. We have less than three minutes before the elevators are fully overridden."

Pushing Clara through the swinging doors, Julian sprinted down the hall toward the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The ward was encased in bullet-resistant glass, accessible only via biometric keycard.

Through the transparent partition, Julian saw two security guards in Sterling corporate tactical gear already inside, speaking aggressively to an elderly night nurse who was blocking the door to the incubator room.

"Open the lock!" one of the guards barked, his hand resting on his holstered firearm. "We have authorization from the hospital board to transport the infant to a private facility!"

"You cannot move a premature newborn without the attending physician's signed transfer orders!" the nurse argued fiercely, her arms outstretched.

Julian didn't wait to negotiate. He pulled the suppressed pistol from his belt, aimed at the electronic locking mechanism beside the glass doors, and fired twice.

The keypad exploded into a shower of sparks and shattered plastic. The magnetic lock failed, releasing the heavy doors with a pneumatic hiss.

Julian shoved the doors open, raising the weapon. "Step away from the nurse! Hands where I can see them!"

The two guards turned, their training taking over instantly. The first guard drew his sidearm, but Julian fired low, catching the man in the right thigh. The guard collapsed with a howl of pain, his gun skittering across the polished floor.

The second guard lunged forward, tackling Julian against the nurse's station, sending computer monitors and patient charts crashing down. The guard was heavy, his forearms pressing into Julian’s throat, cutting off his airway.

Julian struggled, his vision darkening at the edges. With a desperate heave, he reached blindly across the counter, his fingers wrapping around a heavy stainless steel clipboard.

He smashed the sharp corner of the metal board into the guard's temple.

The man grunted, his grip slacking, and Julian delivered a brutal knee to his sternum, throwing him off. Julian scrambled to his feet, leveling the gun at the disoriented guard. "On the floor! Face down, now!"

The nurse backed away, terrified, but Clara rolled herself forward into the room, her eyes locked entirely on the rows of glowing clear boxes.

"Nurse," Clara pleaded, her voice trembling with maternal desperation. "Please. That's my daughter. In incubator four. Help us get her out."

The nurse looked at the wounded guards, then at Clara’s bloodstained gown, and finally at Julian’s desperate, pleading expression. Her hesitation vanished.

"She needs portable oxygen," the nurse said briskly, rushing toward incubator four. "She won't survive ten minutes without an incubator transport pod. Give me sixty seconds."

Behind them, the stairwell door at the far end of the corridor was kicked off its hinges with a violent crash. Heavy, tactical footsteps approached in rapid cadence.
