Chapter 1 - The Mask Falls

Julian knelt on the cold expanse of polished Italian marble, the fabric of his tailored petrol-blue suit straining against his tensed muscles. Beneath his trembling hands, seven-year-old Diego gasped for shallow, ragged breaths. Julian’s fingers gently parted the boy’s crisp white collared shirt, and the sight turned his blood to ice. Across Diego’s frail ribcage stretched a hideous constellation of mottled purple, deep crimson, and sickly yellow contusions—some fresh, others days old.

"Ow... Dad, it hurts..." Diego whimpered, a solitary tear tracing a path through the dust on his cheek before sinking into the rug.

Behind him, standing silhouetted against the blinding midday sun pouring through the penthouse glass, stood Julian’s second wife, Vanessa. She shifted her weight casually, crossing her arms over her pristine grey tweed blazer. A dismissive smirk played upon her painted lips, her gold wedding ring catching the light as she tapped her chin with mock boredom.

"He just wants attention, Julian," Vanessa scoffed lightly, rolling her eyes toward the soaring ceiling. "You know how dramatic boys his age can be. He probably tripped over his own clumsy feet during tennis practice and decided to put on a show for your benefit."

Julian did not blink. The frantic panic that had gripped him seconds earlier evaporated, leaving behind a frozen, crystalline void. He raised his head with agonizing slowness. His dark eyes locked onto Vanessa’s face with a ferocious, predatory intensity that wiped the casual amusement clean from her expression. His knuckles turned bone-white against the floor.

"Attention?" Julian’s voice dropped to a sinister, gravelly whisper that seemed to rattle the heavy glass walls of the penthouse. "You think broken bones and deliberate trauma are a bid for attention?"

Vanessa straightened, her posture stiffening as an instinctive wave of dread rippled down her spine. "Don't look at me like that, Julian. Are you implying something?"

May you like

"This isn't an implication, Vanessa," Julian said, standing up to his full, towering height, stepping directly between his weeping son and the woman he had foolishly trusted. "This is just the beginning."

Before she could speak, Diego choked out a weak cough, and a terrifying drop of bright scarlet trickled from the corner of the boy's pale mouth.
