Chapter 15 - The Final Reckoning

Julian gently patted Diego’s shoulder. "Drink your cocoa, Diego. I’ll be right back."
Julian walked slowly down the cobblestone driveway toward the heavy wrought-iron security gates. Ronald was standing beside the black sedan, holding a sealed manila envelope stamped with the seal of the State Department.
"What is it, Ronald?" Julian asked, his voice returning to its sharp, protective baseline.
Ronald handed him the envelope. "The final sentencing hearings concluded this morning, Julian. Mark received thirty-five years without the possibility of parole at ADX Florence. Given the enemies he accumulated in the shipping docks, the warden estimates he won't survive eighteen months."
Julian nodded slowly, feeling neither joy nor remorse. It was simply a balance sheet settled. "And Vanessa?"
Ronald hesitated, his jaw tightening slightly. "Vanessa was sentenced to eight years at a maximum-security state facility for felony child abuse and grand larceny. But... she didn't make it to the facility, Julian."
Julian’s eyes narrowed slightly. "What happened?"
"During the prisoner transport transfer across the state line, the van was intercepted," Ronald explained, opening the folder to reveal forensic crime scene photographs. "It was an ambush. The guards were incapacitated with stun munitions, but left unharmed. Vanessa was extracted."
Julian stared at the photographs of the empty, bullet-riddled transport vehicle sitting on an isolated mountain highway. A heavy, familiar dread began to creep back into the air.
"Who took her, Ronald?" Julian asked, his voice dropping into the deadly, freezing octave of a predator preparing for battle once more.
Ronald pulled out a single piece of evidence recovered from the asphalt: a scorched brass medallion depicting a double-headed eagle—the personal crest of Vanessa’s biological father, a notorious Russian oligarch who had vanished from international registries a decade ago.
"Her family wasn't dead, Julian," Ronald said quietly. "She lied about her past from the very beginning. Her father is alive, and he just brought his daughter home."

Across the lawn, young Diego’s laughter echoed sweetly in the crisp autumn air as he tossed a rubber ball for his dog.
Julian closed the manila folder. He slowly looked up at the sweeping perimeter walls of his coastal estate, his knuckles popping as his hands clenched into fists of stone. The first battle was over, but the true war for his son’s survival had only just begun.
