Chapter 9 - Total Annihilation

Julian tossed Mark back onto the glass-strewn floor as if he were nothing more than a sack of rotting garbage. He reached into his pocket and withdrew a thick, black leather folder, tossing it onto the wet mahogany table.
"Read it," Julian commanded.
Mark, sobbing and clutching his mangled, bleeding wrist, pulled the documents closer with trembling fingers. Vanessa crept forward, her eyes darting over the dense legal terminology, and as she read, the remaining color drained entirely from her face.
"This... this is an asset seizure order," Mark stammered, coughing up blood. "From the federal treasury? How... how do you have this?"
"For five years, Mark, I turned a blind eye to your smuggling operations through Terminal Nine," Julian stated coldly. "I knew you were moving undeclared freight to pad your private accounts. I let it slide because our late father asked me on his deathbed to protect you. I treated you like a brother. But today, I handed your encrypted ledgers, your offshore shell corporations, and your shipping manifests directly to the Department of Justice, Interpol, and the Internal Revenue Service."
Mark’s breath caught in his throat. "Julian... no. That carries a mandatory thirty-year sentence in federal penitentiary. I will die in there!"
"You won't die, Mark," Julian said with a chilling smile that didn't reach his glacial eyes. "Because the men you borrowed twenty million dollars from to fund your dummy logistics company? The cartel bosses in Sinaloa? I called them twenty minutes ago. I informed them that their money was seized by the federal government because of your reckless bookkeeping."
Mark began to hyperventilate, his eyes rolling back in sheer, unadulterated dread. "You signed my death warrant! They'll skin me alive!"
"You should have thought of that before you terrified my son," Julian responded. He turned his attention to Vanessa, who was cowering against the velvet cushions, shaking like a leaf in a hurricane. "And you, Vanessa."
Vanessa dropped to her knees, clasping her hands in desperate, groveling prayer. "Julian, please! I'll sign the divorce! I'll give back the money! I'll leave the country! You can have everything! Just don't send me to prison! Please, I was sick, I need help!"
Julian looked down at her with pure, unadulterated disgust. "You aren't going to prison yet, Vanessa. That would be too easy. A cell provides three meals a day and a roof over your head. First, you are going to experience absolute, inescapable bankruptcy."
Julian signaled Ronald, who stepped forward with a secondary legal writ.
"Every trust, every offshore entity, every piece of real estate deeded in your maiden name was funded with embezzled corporate capital," Ronald declared. "All frozen. Your personal accounts are overdrawn by four million dollars due to default penalties. Your family’s estate in Aspen has been seized. You possess nothing. Not a single cent."
Julian turned on his heel, walking toward the exit. "Leave them. The federal marshals are already downstairs."
As Julian exited the club, the mournful wail of police sirens echoed down the street. But inside the dark back of his limousine, Julian's phone buzzed with an emergency alert from St. Jude’s Hospital.
