Chapter 14 - The Rebirth

Two weeks later, the morning sun rose gently over the coastline of Julian’s private estate in Maine. Far away from the suffocating concrete towers and predatory politics of the city, the only sound was the rhythmic crashing of ocean waves against the rocky cliffs.

On the manicured lawn overlooking the Atlantic, Diego sat in a comfortable wicker chair wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket. The cast on his arm had been replaced by a lightweight, removable brace. The awful bruises that had once covered his torso were fading into faint, yellow shadows of a forgotten nightmare. His hollow, sunken cheeks had regained their rosy fullness, and for the first time in months, his big hazel eyes sparkled with genuine peace.

Beside him, a golden retriever puppy Julian had brought home three days ago bounded around his feet, playfully tugging at Diego’s shoelaces. Diego let out a bright, musical laugh—a sound Julian hadn't heard since his wife had passed away years ago.

Julian walked out onto the stone patio, holding two steaming mugs of hot cocoa topped with generous mounds of whipped cream. He wore a simple flannel shirt and jeans, having completely discarded the armored suits of his corporate war.

"Here you go, buddy," Julian said, kneeling beside Diego’s chair and handing him the mug.

"Thanks, Dad," Diego smiled, taking a sip and immediately getting a mustache of white cream on his upper lip. He looked out at the vast, endless blue sea. "Dad? Are we ever going back to the big apartment in the city?"

Julian looked down at his son, his heart swelling with a fierce, unbreakable devotion. "No, Diego. We sold the penthouse. We're staying here. Just you, me, and Barnaby."

Diego looked down at the playful puppy, his smile softening. "Do you think Mom is watching us?"

Julian wrapped his arm around his son’s shoulders, pulling him close against his chest. "I know she is. And she knows you're safe now."

Diego leaned into his father's warmth, closing his eyes, letting the ocean breeze wash over him. But as Julian looked out toward the distant horizon, a lone black sedan quietly pulled up to the security gates at the end of the private drive.
