Chapter 6 - The Unseen Shadow

Julian felt the room plunge into an abyssal chill. He gently squeezed Diego’s small hand, keeping his facial expression deliberately soft, warm, and comforting, hiding the monstrous volcano erupting within his chest.

"Tell me about him, Diego," Julian urged softly, his voice a soothing lullaby masking pure poison. "What did this man look like? Did he have a name?"

Diego stared at the ceiling, shivering slightly despite the warm hospital blankets. "He had a snake on his wrist. A tattoo with green eyes. Vanessa called him... she called him Marcus. No, not Marcus... Mark. She called him Mark. He told me if I screamed, he’d throw my dog off the balcony."

Julian’s mind raced through corporate rosters, social circles, private security details, and elite club memberships. Mark. A snake tattoo.

Suddenly, a knock sounded at the hospital door. Ronald entered quietly, carrying an encrypted tablet. Seeing Diego awake, Ronald offered the young boy a gentle, grandfatherly smile before stepping to the foot of the bed and nodding toward Julian.

Julian leaned down and kissed Diego’s forehead. "Rest, my brave boy. Daddy will be right outside the door. Ronald’s men are standing guard right here. No one gets in."

Diego closed his eyes, comforted by his father's presence, drifting back into the sedative-induced sleep.

Stepping into the sterile corridor, Julian transformed back into the ruthless oligarch. "Tell me."

Ronald unlocked the tablet. "The forensic data recovery on the penthouse cameras is complete. It took three hours to scrape the flash storage chips from the primary drive. Vanessa thought she formatted them, but she only cleared the file directories. We have eighty hours of footage, Julian."

"Show me the man," Julian commanded.

Ronald swiped the screen. A time-stamped video from three weeks ago played in high definition. The footage showed the penthouse living room. Vanessa was drinking champagne on the sofa. Standing beside her was Mark Vance—Julian’s estranged half-brother and the chief operating officer of the Vance Logistics division. On Mark's right wrist was the unmistakable, scaly ink of a coiled viper.

Julian stared at the screen, his breathing completely stopping. His own blood. His own flesh.

"It wasn't just physical cruelty, Julian," Ronald said quietly, swiping to a digital ledger. "Look at the financial logs we extracted from her private laptop. Mark and Vanessa have been systematically siphoning funds from Diego’s trust fund for eight months."

"How much?" Julian asked, his voice dead.

"Forty million dollars. And Julian... there's an insurance policy. A sixty-million-dollar accidental child fatality policy taken out under Diego’s name, forged with your signature."
