BOUND BY BLOOD AND LIES / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - The Mark of a Traitor

The heavy scent of cedar, gun smoke, and antiseptic hung suffocatingly thick inside the master suite. Julian Vance kept his fingers locked around Alina Brooks’s slender wrist, his knuckles pale and scarred from the ambush that had left him shredded two hours before. His shirtless torso rose and fell with controlled, agonizing precision. Every shallow breath pulled against the three fractured ribs taped beneath his skin, but his slate-gray eyes never betrayed an ounce of vulnerability.

Beside him on the sprawling mattress, Alina felt the bite of his steel watch against her skin. Her black silk nightgown was cold where his blood had seeped into the fabric. She stared toward the cavernous doorway where Madam Helena Vance stood framed against the dim hallway, flanked by two towering bodyguards whose hands hovered inches above their suppressed sidearms. Helena rested both palms on the polished silver head of her walking cane, her silver hair arranged in flawless, unforgiving waves.

"Fiancée?" Helena repeated the word as if testing the weight of a counterfeit coin. Her voice carried the calm, lethal cadence of a woman who had ordered dozen executions before breakfast. She tapped the cane once against the parquet floor. The crack echoed like a gunshot. "A rather sudden promotion for an archivist whose brother was caught siphoning Vance cartel wire transfers last Friday, Julian."

Alina flinched. The secret she had buried beneath forged ledgers and midnight deletions had just been stripped bare in front of the most dangerous woman on the eastern seaboard. She tried to pull back, to scramble off the opposite side of the bed, but Julian tightened his grip until her bones ground together.

"She didn't know what her brother was doing," Julian lied smoothly, not breaking eye contact with his adoptive mother. "She came to me last night to confess. To hand over the jump drive before Michael could deliver it to the federal prosecutor."

Helena’s painted red lips curved into a smile devoid of warmth. She stepped closer to the edge of the bed, her cane sinking soundlessly into the dark plush rug. "Is that the story we are presenting to the syndicate board? Because while you were bleeding out on the highway outside Newark, five of our offshore accounts were frozen by the Southern District of New York." She leaned forward, the perfume of night-blooming jasmine washing over Alina like a suffocating shroud. "Tell me, Miss Brooks. If my son dies of internal bleeding within the next forty-eight hours, who protects your throat from a garrote wire?"

Alina swallowed hard, her mouth dry as ash. "Julian knows I didn't touch those accounts."

"Julian is concussed and blinded by blood," Helena murmured softly. She raised a gloved hand and snapped her fingers at the bodyguard on her left. "Take her down to the sub-level vaults. Let Marcus review her personal telephone records while we stitch the heir apparent back together."

"Touch her, and I empty my magazine into your chest, Viktor," Julian rasped.

The room froze. With his free hand, Julian had slipped a black Glock 19 from beneath the extra pillow, leveling the barrel squarely at the forehead of Helena’s lead enforcer. The air turned brittle, suffocating.

Helena didn't blink. She merely tilted her head, watching her heir with cold amusement. "You would pull iron on family for a girl you met six months ago in a library archive?"

"She isn't just an archivist anymore. She carries the Vance name as of dawn," Julian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous gravel. "Call the syndicate judge. Set the vows for tonight."

Helena studied him for several agonizing seconds before letting out a soft, mocking laugh. "Very well. A wedding at dusk. But understand this, my sweet, reckless boy: the moment the ink is dry on that contract, every cartel looking to tear down this family will put a crosshair on her head."

Helena turned on her heel and glided out of the room, her bodyguards falling in step behind her. The heavy oak doors clicked shut with the finality of a prison cell.

Julian’s arm dropped instantly, the heavy handgun slipping from his fingers onto the mattress. His skin turned a sickly, translucent gray, and a dark drop of blood welled at the corner of his lips.

"Julian!" Alina gasped, rolling onto her knees and grabbing his shoulder.

Julian caught her collar, dragging her down until his mouth brushed her ear. "You think you're safe?" he breathed, his voice barely audible over his failing heartbeat. "My mother already knows your brother is dead... and the flash drive you gave me was completely blank."
