Chapter 15 - The Final Bloodline

The gunshot shattered the tense standoff, the heavy hollow-point round striking Lucas squarely in the center of his armored chest plate.
The kinetic force threw the older brother backward through the shattered doorway, but the ceramic trauma plate absorbed the fatal penetration. Lucas rolled across the marble landing, bringing his silver 1911 up and squeezing off three rapid rounds into the library.
One bullet grazed Julian’s left thigh, tearing through his dark trousers and drawing a hot line of blood. Julian grunted, dropping to one knee, but returned fire, forcing Lucas behind the cover of the marble pillars outside.
"Move! To the courtyard!" Julian commanded Alina.
They broke through the shattered French doors, vaulting over the stone balustrade and dropping eight feet onto the sloping gravel path that wound down toward the private harbor. The Baltic rain had begun to fall, a freezing drizzle that turned the gravel slick underfoot.
Ahead of them, near the burning wreckage of the villa’s security gate, lay Nikolai Petrov.
The old Russian mobster was propped against the wheel of a destroyed armored transport, clutching his bleeding chest with a trembling, blackened hand. Two of his surviving bodyguards were returning fire against Lucas’s mercenaries who were advancing down the tree line.
"Father!" Alina cried, sliding down the wet gravel to his side.
Nikolai looked up, his breathing wet and labored, blood bubbling at the corner of his lips. When he saw Alina, a weak, fierce smile broke through the agony on his face. "Yelena... you have your mother’s courage..."
"Save your strength," she pleaded, tearing the sleeve of her wool sweater to press it against his chest wound. "The transport boat is at the dock. We can get you out!"
"No," Nikolai rasped, pushing her hand away with the last ounce of his strength. He reached into his coat and pulled out an antique brass key on a heavy chain, pressing it into her palm. "The vault beneath the Winter Palace archives... the original charters... they prove the Vance syndicate was built on Petrov blood. You are the rightful sovereign of both houses, Alina. Not Julian. Not Lucas."
Nikolai turned his fading eyes toward Julian, who stood guard over them, his rifle sweeping the misty forest.
"Take care of my daughter, Vance," the old warlord whispered, his grip slackening. "Or I will climb out of hell to slaughter you."
Nikolai’s head fell back against the tire. The great Russian bear took one final, shuddering breath, and went still.
Alina let out a choked sob, closing her father's eyes with trembling fingers. She stood up, her grief hardening instantly into diamond-sharp fury. She slipped the brass key into her pocket and racked the slide of her weapon.
From the fog above, a slow, mocking clapping echoed through the trees.
Lucas Vance walked down the gravel path, his rifle resting casually on his shoulder. Ten heavily armed private contractors emerged from the mist behind him, forming an unbreakable perimeter around the three of them.
"A touching family reunion," Lucas sneered, stopping twenty paces away. "Now, little brother, it’s time to settle the estate."
Lucas leveled his rifle directly at Julian’s head.
Julian stepped forward, putting himself between Lucas and Alina. His face was a mask of cold, unyielding defiance. "Let her go to the boat, Lucas. It’s between you and me."
"You don't negotiate without leverage, Julian," Lucas said coldly. "And you have none."
"She has leverage," a voice boomed from the misty cliffs above them.
Lucas frowned, his mercenaries instantly scanning the high rocks.
Rising over the crest of the hill were thirty heavily armed soldiers in Russian military-grade tactical gear, led by an imposing figure in an immaculate charcoal suit.
It was Viktor.
He was alive—his throat wrapped in heavy surgical gauze where the bullet had grazed his carotid artery weeks ago, his eyes burning with absolute, fanatical loyalty.
"Viktor?" Lucas said, his composure cracking for the first time. "You work for the Vance syndicate!"
"I served Helena Vance," Viktor’s scarred, mechanical voice rasped through a personal microphone. "And Helena’s will was explicit. If her biological son ever returned from the shadows to claim the throne, he was to be exterminated as a traitor to the five families."
Lucas’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief. "She lied to me..."
"Helena lied to everyone," Julian said quietly.
Julian moved with blinding, lethal speed. Before Lucas could turn his weapon, Julian closed the distance, his combat knife flashing from his belt.
Lucas raised his rifle to block, but Julian knocked the barrel aside with his forearm, driving the heavy steel blade upward beneath Lucas’s chin, through the soft tissue and into the base of the skull.
Lucas stiffened, his blue eyes widening in sudden, absolute shock. The silver 1911 slipped from his nerveless fingers, splashing into the muddy gravel.
Julian leaned in, his lips brushing his brother's ear as Lucas’s body went limp against him.
"Give Mother my regards," Julian whispered.
Julian released the hilt, and Lucas Vance collapsed into the mud, lifeless.
The remaining mercenaries instantly dropped their weapons, raising their hands as Viktor’s forces surrounded the clearing.
Silence fell over the cliffside, broken only by the crash of the Baltic waves against the rocks below.
Julian turned slowly to face Alina. He was covered in his brother’s blood, his chest heaving, his body battered and broken by a lifetime of violence.
Alina walked toward him through the rain. She didn't look at the corpses scattered across the gravel. She didn't look at the small army of soldiers waiting for orders.
She stopped in front of Julian, reached out, and gently took his bloody right hand into hers.
"Is it over?" she asked softly.
May you like
Julian looked down at their joined hands, at the black diamond ring that had bound them together in a concrete bunker a lifetime ago. He slowly looked up, his slate-gray eyes meeting hers with an intensity that burned through the freezing mist.
"No," Julian said, his fingers tightening around hers with unbreakable resolve. "We have an empire to run."
