Chapter 11 - The Queen's Checkmate

Alina fell out of the SUV, her numb legs unable to support her weight. The cold rain soaked through her torn silk nightgown, chilling her to the bone. She landed on the wet concrete beside Michael, whose face was pressed into the asphalt under the heavy boot of Viktor.
The timer in Alina's mind was an agonizing drumbeat: 00:04:12. Her throat was closing up. Every breath felt like swallowing broken glass.
Helena walked slowly toward her, the pearl-handled derringer pointed directly between Alina’s eyes. The fire from the burning pier cast dancing, demonic shadows across Helena's wrinkled, aristocratic face.
"You really thought my son could save you?" Helena said, her voice dripping with cruel satisfaction. "Julian was always too sentimental. Just like his father. He thinks with his heart, which makes him terribly predictable."
Helena reached into her coat and pulled out a small, sleek black device with an LED display. It was a secondary remote—the master override for the neurotoxin capsule.
"You had it all along," Alina wheezed, her fingernails scraping against the wet stone. "Cross didn't have it... you did."
"Of course I had it," Helena purred, tilting her head. "I purchased the proprietary rights to that technology from the CIA ten years ago when I needed a leash for your father. Did you really think I would let Alexander Cross keep the detonator for my greatest asset?"
Helena knelt down, her face inches from Alina's. "Your father's captains in Brighton Beach have already agreed to surrender. But they demanded proof that Nikolai’s daughter was dead before they swore fealty to me. They didn't want a civil war between bloodlines."
Helena raised the pistol, pressing the cold steel barrel against Alina’s forehead.
"So you see, my dear... your death was always the only acceptable outcome. Julian’s little rebellion just made it convenient to clean up the board in one stroke."
"Shoot her, and you die where you stand, Helena."
The voice was barely human—a low, guttural rasp that seemed to rise from the depths of hell.
Helena froze.
Stepping out of the burning wall of black smoke behind the shipping containers was Julian.
He was barely recognizable. His shirt was completely shredded and soaked in blood. His right shoulder was shattered, his left arm hanging limp, and half of his face was covered in soot and burns. But in his left hand, he was dragging Alexander Cross by the hair, throwing the mercenary leader’s lifeless body onto the concrete like a sack of rubbish.
In Julian's right hand was a combat knife, dripping with rain and crimson.
Viktor instantly shifted his rifle toward Julian, but before he could squeeze the trigger, a gunshot rang out from the darkness of the pier’s perimeter.
Viktor’s throat exploded in a shower of red. The giant bodyguard collapsed backward, dead before he hit the ground.
From the shadows stepped Nikolai Petrov, flanked by four heavily armed Bratva soldiers in drenched leather jackets. Nikolai held a smoking heavy revolver, his arm in a sling, his gray eyes blazing with ancient fury.
"Nikolai..." Helena whispered, taking a step back, her pistol wavering for the first time. "How did you escape the black site?"
"You think your men know how to guard a Russian wolf?" Nikolai spat, his voice like grinding millstones. "Julian called my loyalists the moment he blew your perimeter. He traded your coordinates for my daughter's life."
Helena’s eyes darted to Julian in sheer disbelief. "You allied with the Bratva? You broke the sacred syndicate treaty!"
"You killed my father, Helena," Julian said, his voice shaking with the effort of staying upright. He took one step closer, every movement agonizing. "The treaty died twenty years ago."
The countdown on Helena’s remote began to emit a high-pitched, rapid beep: 00:00:45.
"Drop the remote, Helena," Julian growled, raising his weapon with trembling hands.
May you like
Helena looked at the Bratva rifles aimed at her chest, looked at Julian, and let out a cold, manic laugh.
"If I burn," Helena hissed, her thumb hovering over the red override button, "the little Russian dies with me!"
