Chapter 13 - The Russian Shore

Three weeks later, the Baltic Sea was a sheet of gray glass beneath an overcast sky.

Alina stood on the terrace of a heavily fortified stone villa carved into the cliffs outside Saint Petersburg. She wore a heavy wool sweater and dark trousers, the cold northern wind whipping her dark hair across her face. On her third finger, the black diamond ring remained, catching the pale, watery sunlight.

The double doors behind her creaked open.

Julian walked out onto the terrace. He moved with a slight limp, his torso wrapped in tight medical compression bands beneath a dark cashmere sweater, but his color had returned. The scars on his face and jaw had faded to jagged silver lines, giving his sharp features an even more dangerous, aristocratic edge.

He leaned against the stone balustrade beside her, looking out over the endless expanse of the sea.

"Callahan says you shouldn't be standing in the cold," Alina said softly, not looking away from the horizon.

"Callahan talks too much," Julian replied, his voice deep and steady.

A comfortable silence settled between them, a luxury they had never possessed in the blood-soaked hallways of Manhattan.

"My father wants to give me his seat on the Bratva council," Alina said quietly. "He says the bloodline must continue."

Julian turned his head to look at her. "And what did you tell him?"

"I told him I’m an archivist, not an executioner," she said, finally turning to meet his gray eyes. "Michael is in Switzerland. He bought a small farm near the Alps. He's safe, Julian. For the first time in his life."

Julian gave a faint nod. "Good. That was the deal."

"And what about you?" Alina asked, taking a step closer to him, her heart skipping a beat as his familiar presence surrounded her. "The Five Families in New York have put a fifty-million-dollar bounty on your head. They claim you assassinated Helena and betrayed the syndicate."

"Let them come," Julian said coldly. "The Vance name died with Helena. I have nothing left in that city."

Alina reached out, her fingers gently touching the side of his neck, where the scar from the field transfusion remained. "You have me."

Julian caught her hand, his thumb tracing the contour of her knuckles, his eyes softening with a rare, devastating tenderness. "You're free, Alina. You don't owe me anything. You don't have to stay in this shadow."

"I'm not staying because I owe you, Julian," she whispered, stepping into his arms and resting her head against his chest, listening to the strong, steady beat of his heart. "I'm staying because I'm not afraid of the dark anymore."

Julian wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close against the biting Baltic wind, pressing a tender kiss into her hair. For the first time in his life, he felt peace.

Suddenly, a sharp acoustic crack shattered the tranquil morning.

A high-velocity sniper round punched through the heavy stone balustrade inches from Julian’s head, showering them in stone dust.

Julian reacted instantly, tackling Alina to the terrace floor, shielding her body with his own as a second round ricocheted off the iron railing above them.

Down in the pine forests at the base of the cliffs, three black tactical helicopters rose above the tree line, bearing no markings.

Julian’s secure satellite phone buzzed against the stone floor. He swiped the screen, putting it on speaker as automatic gunfire erupted from the villa’s outer perimeter.

A chilling, familiar voice echoed from the speaker:

"Did you really think the Five Families would let you retire, Julian? Helena had a second will... and you're not the only heir she left behind."
