Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Edge

The rain slammed against the armored windshield of the SUV in violent, rhythmic sheets. The red timer on the dashboard read 00:14:18.

Alina’s left arm had gone completely limp, the cold sensation spreading up her throat like liquid ice. Her breathing was shallow, whistling through clenched teeth. "Julian... we're boxed in."

In the back seat, Michael cocked the submachine gun with his good hand, his face white as a sheet. "We can't fight both of them. We're dead."

Julian didn't look back at Helena's blockade, nor did he look at the mercenary battalion waiting on the dock. Instead, he opened the center console between the seats and pulled out a heavy steel detonator switch equipped with a folding safety guard.

"Julian... what is that?" Alina whispered.

"The Vance family didn't survive forty years on diplomacy," Julian said, his voice dropping into a chilling calm. "Every shipment of industrial chemicals that enters Pier 42 passes through my personal logistics company. Three years ago, when I realized Helena was planning to replace me, I wired the structural supports of this entire pier with military-grade C4."

Michael stared at him in sheer horror. "You wired the docks?"

"Cross thinks he's taking this city," Julian said, thumbing back the safety guard on the detonator. "Helena thinks she's taking the docks. Neither of them leaves this pier alive."

Julian turned to Alina. He leaned over, took her face in his hands, and pressed his forehead against hers. "When the charges blow, the pier's eastern crane will collapse across the cargo ship's stern. That creates a blind spot in their defensive line. I'm going for Cross. Michael, the second the concrete shatters, you drive this SUV through the chain-link fence on the left and head straight for the water rescue ramp. Do you understand me?"

"Julian, no!" Alina cried out, finding the strength to clutch his forearm. "You can't take on Cross’s men alone! You're already bleeding out!"

"He has the transmitter, Alina," Julian said, his gray eyes burning with an unshakeable fire. "There is no other way."

Without waiting for an answer, Julian slammed his thumb down onto the red detonator button.

A deep, subterranean rumble shook the earth, followed by a deafening series of explosions that tore through the concrete foundations of Pier 42. Pillars of orange fire and shattered rock erupted into the night sky. The massive industrial crane groaned under the shockwave, its steel cables snapping like violin strings before the multi-ton metal tower collapsed directly onto the cargo vessel's loading bay, crushing three mercenary vehicles and throwing Cross’s perimeter into utter pandemonium.

"Drive!" Julian roared at Michael as he kicked the driver’s door open and rolled into the rainy darkness.

Gunfire erupted instantly from both directions. Helena’s syndicate enforcers engaged Cross’s private military in a chaotic, cross-firing massacre.

Michael scrambled into the front seat, slammed the gear shift into drive, and floored the accelerator, sending the armored SUV crashing through the chain-link perimeter toward the shoreline.

Through the shattered rear window, Alina watched Julian.

He moved through the smoke and fire like an avenging demon. Firing his rifle with brutal precision, he dropped two mercenaries before vaulting over the burning wreckage of a shipping container. A round caught him in his right shoulder, spinning him around, but Julian didn't stop. He drew his sidearm and drove forward toward the loading platform where Alexander Cross was scrambling toward an armored escape launch.

"Julian!" Alina screamed, but her voice was swallowed by the roar of the burning pier.

The timer in her vision was fading. Dark spots danced across her eyes. Her heart was beating at a frantic, erratic pace. 00:06:30.

The SUV slammed to a halt against a concrete barrier near the water ramp. Michael turned around, tears pouring down his face. "Alina, stay with me! Please!"

"I have to go back..." she whispered, her fingers fumbling with the door handle.

Suddenly, a shadow blocked the driver’s window.

The door was ripped open from the outside. A gloved hand reached in, dragging Michael out by the collar and throwing him violently onto the wet pavement.

Helena Vance stood there, holding a suppressed pistol, her silver hair plastered to her skull by the torrential rain. Behind her stood Viktor, his rifle aimed straight at Alina.

"Out of the vehicle, child," Helena commanded, her voice cutting through the storm like a scythe. "The game is over."
