Chapter 5 - Blood on the Altar

The subterranean blast door hissed as the vacuum seal broke, grinding open with the terrible groan of heavy steel against stone. A thick cloud of cordite and burnt copper rolled into the room, stinging Alina’s eyes.

Julian stepped through the threshold first. He was barely holding himself upright, his shoulder braced against the frame. His left side was saturated in crimson, the makeshift field dressings long since shredded, but the gun in his hand never wavered. With a brutal heave, he shoved Nikolai Petrov forward onto the concrete floor.

The Bratva boss crashed down hard, coughing up a spatter of dark blood. Nikolai was an imposing man, even in defeat—barrel-chested, silver-bearded, with predatory blue eyes that burned with feverish defiance beneath a battered brow.

"Julian," Helena said, her voice dropping into a register of razor-sharp displeasure. She didn't look at the dying warlord on the floor; her eyes were locked onto her son’s pale, bloodless face. "I gave orders to secure the estate perimeter, not to drag a rabid animal into the family sanctuary."

"The perimeter is clear," Julian rasped, his voice raw and ragged. "The rest of his strike team is dead in the courtyard. He's the only one left drawing breath."

Nikolai spat a mouthful of red onto the polished slate floor and let out a wheezing, broken laugh. He lifted his head, his eyes scanning the vault until they locked onto Alina. The old man’s breath caught in his throat. The ruthless glare softened into something raw, terrifying, and undeniably paternal.

"Yelena..." Nikolai whispered in Russian, his scarred hands trembling as he reached out toward her. "My God... you have your mother's eyes."

Alina stepped backward until her spine hit the server racks, the cold steel biting into her shoulder blades. "Stay away from me."

"Alina," Nikolai groaned, switching to thick, accented English. "Do not let them poison you. The Vances are butchers. They killed your mother. They framed my organization to start a turf war twenty years ago so they could swallow the eastern docks!"

"Silence him, Viktor," Helena ordered coldly.

Viktor stepped forward, raising his pistol, but Julian moved faster. He stepped between Viktor and the Russian, leveling his tactical rifle at Viktor's throat.

"Nobody executes him until I get the access cipher for the Swiss transit accounts," Julian stated, every syllable dripping with lethal intent. "The five families are arriving at the gate right now. If we don't restore the liquidity in those accounts within sixty seconds of their arrival, the syndicate will authorize a scorched-earth mandate on this house."

Helena’s eyes narrowed into slits. "He will never give you the cipher, Julian. A Petrov only trades in blood."

Julian didn't look back at Helena. Instead, his gaze shifted slowly to Alina. His expression was unreadable, a mask of cold titanium that sent ice through her veins.

"He'll give it to me," Julian said quietly. "Won't you, Nikolai? To save your daughter’s life."

Julian reached out with lightning speed, grabbed Alina by the arm, and pulled her roughly against his chest. He pressed the cold muzzle of his Glock directly beneath her jaw, forcing her head back.

"Julian!" Alina gasped, her eyes wide with shock and betrayal. "What are you doing?!"

"Playing the only hand I have left," Julian whispered in her ear, his breath hot against her temple. Then, looking down at the Russian mobster, his voice boomed through the bunker: "Give me the twelve-digit cipher, Petrov, or I end your bloodline right here on the concrete. You have five seconds."

Nikolai’s face twisted in agony. "You coward! She is an innocent! She knows nothing!"

"One," Julian counted, cocking the hammer of the gun. The metallic click was deafening.

"Wait! Stop!" Nikolai roared, slamming his fist against the floor. "The cipher is her mother's birthday! 14-08-19-74! Take it! Let her go!"

Julian didn't lower the gun. He kept the barrel pressed into Alina’s soft skin as he barked an order to the terminal operator across the room: "Enter it. Route forty million to the Gambino and Lucchese holdings immediately."

The technician’s fingers flew across the keyboard. Three seconds later, a green chime echoed through the vault speakers.

"Transfer verified," the technician announced, breathless. "The accounts are solvent. The syndicate lockout is lifted."

A collective breath left the room—except for Alina, who remained paralyzed against Julian’s bleeding chest.

"Good," Helena said smoothly, stepping toward them. She drew a small, pearl-handled derringer from her coat sleeve. "Now that the business is concluded, we can eliminate the loose ends. Viktor, put two in Petrov's skull. Julian, put one in hers."

Alina’s heart stopped. She looked into Julian’s eyes, searching for a glimmer of the man who had thrown himself across her body to shield her from sniper fire twenty minutes ago.

Julian slowly lowered the pistol from her jaw.

"No," Julian said softly.

Helena stopped dead in her tracks. "What did you say?"

"I gave my word to the syndicate board," Julian said, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "Alina Brooks is my fiancée. Cartel law is absolute, Mother. A made man's wife cannot be touched without unanimous sanction from all five families."

Helena’s face drained of color, replaced by a fury so profound it twisted her aristocratic features into something demonic. "You fool. You think you can control her? You think a Petrov will ever be loyal to a Vance?"

"I don't need her loyalty," Julian said, his fingers locking around Alina's trembling hand, digging the black diamond ring deep into her flesh. "I only need her alive to control Brighton Beach."

Suddenly, the heavy blast doors shuddered again. A loud chime signaled an incoming video feed on the main wall monitors.

The face of Salvatore Marcone, the supreme arbiter of the five syndicate families, appeared on screen. Behind him stood the armored motorcades that had just entered the compound gates.

"Helena. Julian," Marcone’s gravelly voice boomed through the speakers. "We are in your courtyard. We see the bodies. The board has convened, and we have brought the syndicate priest. We hear there is a wedding to officiate... or an execution to carry out."

May you like

Julian looked directly into the camera, his grip on Alina tightening until it felt like fire.

"Send the priest down, Salvatore," Julian said calmly. "We're ready to bleed."
