Chapter 1 - The Mark on Her Skin

The clatter of porcelain and silverware against polished mahogany could not muffle the erratic rhythm of Mateo’s pulse. The upscale dining room of L’Aura hummed with ambient jazz and the hollow laughter of the city's elite, but for Mateo, the entire world narrowed to the fragile bone structure beneath his tattooed fingers.
When Clara placed the dish in front of him, the cuff of her white server uniform had ridden up just half an inch. It was enough. The jagged, purple-crimson abrasion circling her slender wrist was unmistakable. It wasn’t a kitchen burn or a clumsy bump against a prep counter; it was the distinct imprint of heavy, cruel fingers clamping down hard enough to crush capillaries.
Mateo’s jaw hardened, the dark ink creeping up his neck shifting as his muscles coiled tight. ""Who did this to you?"" His voice was low, a rumbling baseline that cut straight through the surrounding noise.
Clara froze. The tray in her left hand wavered, her brown eyes darting anxiously toward the kitchen swinging doors before dropping to the tablecloth. ""Please, sir... don’t do this,"" she whispered, her lips trembling. ""You're making a scene. Let go of my hand.""
""Look at me, Clara,"" Mateo demanded, his grip not painful, but unyielding as iron. Tears brimmed along his own dark lashes, born of an agonizing mix of fury and guilt. Ten years had passed since he had walked out of her life to settle the debts of his past—ten years in which he believed he had kept her safe by staying dead to her. Yet here she was, pouring water for strangers and nursing marks of brutality. ""Tell me who did this.""

Clara’s composure shattered. A single tear broke free, carving a glistening path through the fine powder on her cheek. She pulled back slightly, her breath catching in her throat.
""If you don't let me go right now,"" she breathed, her voice cracking beneath the weight of terror, ""his men outside will see you. And they don't leave survivors.""
