Chapter 9 - The Safehouse

By 3:00 AM, the rain had settled into a steady, suffocating drizzle. Mateo had hotwired a beat-up pickup truck from an abandoned gravel yard near the docks and driven them twenty miles outside the city, deep into the Pine Barrens where the trees grew thick and the roads turned to gravel.

He pulled up in front of an unassuming, single-story cabin obscured by dense hemlock and pine. It was an off-grid cache he had established seven years ago—solar panels, well water, emergency medical supplies, and no paper trail.

Mateo carried Clara inside, setting her down on an old leather sofa beside an unlit cast-iron woodstove. He quickly started a fire, the dry pine kindling catching instantly and casting a warm, flickering orange glow over the cabin’s rustic interior.

Clara was wrapped in a thick wool blanket, holding a steaming mug of black tea between trembling hands. She watched silently as Mateo stitched a shallow cut along his own forearm with practiced, emotionless detachment, biting down on a leather belt without making a sound.

""You do that like you’ve done it a hundred times,"" she said softly, breaking the silence.

Mateo tied off the suture with his teeth and snipped the excess thread with a pair of scissors. ""More than a hundred.""

Clara looked away, watching the flames dance in the stove. ""When you left ten years ago, you left a note on the kitchen counter that said you loved me too much to let me die with you. I hated you for that, Mateo. I spent years wishing you had just been honest instead of disappearing like smoke.""

Mateo walked over and knelt before her, looking up into her bruised, tired face. ""Every breath I took after leaving was misery, Clara. But Don Montoya had sworn to slaughter the families of everyone who opposed him. I thought if I died, they would leave you alone. I was arrogant. I didn't realize that to men like Montoya, even a memory is something to control.""

Clara reached out, her fingers gently tracing the dark tattoo curling around his collarbone—a depiction of an archangel stepping on a serpent. ""Julian visited the restaurant three months ago. He dropped your name like a casual threat. He told me that every bruise he gave me was a message across the ether to you. He knew you were alive.""

May you like

Mateo’s jaw locked, his eyes turning to black ice. ""Someone betrayed my location. The only person who knew I was operating in this quadrant was my old handler, Marcus.""

Suddenly, the cabin's perimeter alarm—a faint, rhythmic green diode on the kitchen wall—switched to an ominous, flashing crimson.
