Chapter 14 - The Devil's Parley

""Put the gun down, Mateo,"" Don Montoya wheezed, his voice rattling like dry leaves in an autumn wind. The old man looked like a skeleton draped in expensive silk, but his dark eyes still retained the cold, viper-like malice that had ruled an empire for four decades. ""You wouldn't want to frighten your beautiful child, would you?""
Sofia looked up, her wide, hazel eyes locking onto Mateo. Despite the tactical gear, the bloodstains, and the grim mask of violence on his face, a spark of pure, innocent recognition flickered in the little girl's eyes. She had seen his face in the photograph beneath her mother's pillow every night of her life.
""Daddy...?"" she whimpered, her tiny voice cutting through the smell of gunpowder and rain.
Mateo felt his entire soul fracture at the word. A tear carved through the soot on his cheek. ""Yes, sweetheart. It’s me. Don't look at anything else, okay? Just close your eyes.""
Mateo slowly lowered his rifle to the floor and kicked it away, raising his empty hands. ""You have me, Montoya. I’m standing right here. Let the girl walk out the door. Marcus is in the hallway; he will take her to Clara.""
Montoya wheezed a dry, mocking laugh, coughing violently into a silk handkerchief. ""Marcus... you think that old dog is still loyal to you? Marcus brought you here because I promised his family wouldn't burn with yours.""
Before Mateo could process the words, Marcus stepped into the room through the double doors, holding an assault rifle pointed directly at Mateo's back.
Mateo didn't turn around. His jaw tightened as the betrayal sank in like a cold dagger between his ribs. ""How much did he pay you, Marcus?""
""Enough to buy my grandson a future, Mateo,"" Marcus said in a flat, broken monotone. ""I'm sorry. The old man’s reach is too long. Nobody walks away from this family clean.""
Montoya smiled, exposing yellowed teeth. ""You see, Mateo? In this world, loyalty is just an auction that hasn't closed yet. You stole my son’s future when you ruined my syndicate. And tonight, Julian will personally put a bullet in your head while your daughter watches.""
Mateo turned his head slightly, catching Marcus's reflection in the gold-framed mirror above the mantelpiece. ""Julian is dead, Montoya. His body is at the bottom of Pier 9.""
The old man’s smile vanished instantly. His breathing hitched, his frail chest heaving with sudden, suffocating horror. ""What... what did you say?""

""He died screaming your name,"" Mateo lied with cold, merciless conviction.
In that fraction of a second, as Montoya’s mind buckled under the weight of his son's demise, Mateo acted.
