Chapter 12 - The Iron Fortress

The drive toward Long Island was executed in grim, unbroken silence.

Mateo drove, his knuckles white against the steering wheel of Marcus's armored SUV. Clara sat in the passenger seat, clutching a small, worn photograph she had kept hidden in the locket around her neck—a picture of a little girl with Mateo’s dark, determined eyes and Clara’s gentle smile, wearing a yellow raincoat and grinning broadly at the camera.

In the back, Marcus was assembling heavy tactical hardware: suppressed submachine guns, flashbangs, breaching charges, and ceramic body armor plates.

""You can't hit this compound like a street gang, Mateo,"" Marcus warned, clicking a magazine into a custom assault rifle. ""Montoya has thermal imaging cameras along the entire perimeter wall, motion sensors in the woods, and private military contractors patrolling the grounds in pairs. It’s an iron fortress.""

""I don't need to conquer the fortress,"" Mateo said, his voice flat, emotionless, the voice of the predator he had tried so hard to bury. ""I just need to reach the throne room.""

""And what happens when you do?"" Clara asked, reaching over and resting her trembling hand over his scarred knuckles. ""Montoya won't let her go just because you ask, Mateo. He wants you dead. He wants to wipe your name off the earth.""

Mateo looked at her, his expression softening for just a fraction of a second before hardening into pure resolve. ""He will have me. But Sofia will walk out of that gate with you, Clara. That is a promise carved in stone.""

They reached the perimeter of the oceanfront estate at 4:45 AM, fifteen minutes before the first gray light of dawn would break over the Atlantic. Marcus killed the vehicle lights a quarter-mile down a private service road.

Mateo stepped out into the pre-dawn chill, strapping on the heavy body armor and racking the slide of his primary rifle. He looked down at Clara, who had stepped out after him, tears shimmering in her eyes.

""Wait with the car,"" Mateo told her. ""When Marcus brings Sofia out, you drive. You don't look back, and you don't wait for me.""

Clara shook her head, grabbing his vest. ""No, Mateo! Not again! I won't lose you again!""

Mateo leaned down and kissed her forehead gently. ""You never lost me, Clara. I’ve been yours since the day we met. Now let me bring our daughter home.""
