Chapter 15 - The Final Stand

Mateo didn't dive for his rifle. Instead, he dropped low, sweeping Marcus’s legs from behind with a devastating roundhouse kick. Marcus crashed heavily onto the marble floor, his rifle discharging into the ceiling plaster.
Before Marcus could recover, Mateo pinned the weapon under his boot, grabbed the collar of Marcus’s vest, and delivered two rapid, crushing blows to the man’s jaw, knocking him unconscious.
""Guards! Kill him!"" Montoya shrieked into a radio on his armchair, but the hallway was already silent—the estate's remnants had scattered or been eliminated.
Mateo scooped Sofia into his arms, wrapping his armored jacket around her small frame to shield her eyes. ""Hold onto me tight, Sofia. Don't let go, no matter what happens.""
""I'm holding, Daddy!"" she sobbed, burying her face into his neck, her tiny fingers clutching the collar of his shirt with desperate strength.
Montoya, his face purple with rage and oxygen deprivation, reached into the cushion of his chair, pulling out a snub-nosed revolver with trembling hands. ""You won't leave this room alive, Cruz!""
Mateo drew his sidearm with one fluid motion and fired a single shot. The bullet struck the revolver from Montoya's arthritic grip, shattering the old man's fingers and embedding itself into the mahogany mantelpiece.
Mateo stood over the ruined king of the underworld, his eyes blazing with righteous fury. ""I’m not going to kill you, Montoya. You’re going to sit in this chair, alone, and choke on the ashes of everything you built while cancer eats you from the inside out.""
Without waiting for an answer, Mateo turned and carried his daughter down the grand staircase, stepping over the fallen debris of the shattered compound.
The rain had stopped by the time he kicked open the front gates. The first pink and gold hues of dawn were breaking across the ocean horizon. Standing beside the idling SUV down the road was Clara, her face streaked with tears, watching in disbelief as the two figures emerged from the mist.
""Sofia!"" Clara screamed, sprinting across the dew-soaked grass.
Mateo set the girl down, and Sofia crashed into her mother's embrace, both of them collapsing to their knees in an overwhelming release of grief and salvation. Mateo walked up to them, standing as their shield one last time, looking down at the family he had fought through hell to reclaim.
Clara looked up, her hand reaching out to clasp Mateo’s tattooed fingers. For the first time in a decade, the grip was not one of restraint or fear, but of profound, unbreakable peace.
""It's over,"" Clara whispered, smiling through her tears. ""We’re finally free.""

Mateo looked down at the road stretching toward the rising sun, then back toward the distant sirens beginning to wail on the highway. He reached into his coat, took his gun, and tossed it into the deep weeds by the side of the road.
""Not yet,"" Mateo said softly, opening the truck door for them with a faint, rare smile. ""Now, our life begins."""
