Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Altar of Stone

The bitter autumn wind swept through Saint Jude’s graveyard, stirring the thick, suffocating mist that clung to the damp grass. Elena knelt in the cold, black muck, shivering beneath her stained rust-brown servant’s dress. The chill penetrated straight through the thin linen of her apron, but it was nothing compared to the fiery sting burning across her cheekbone. Her fingers shook as she cradled her heavily swollen abdomen, shielding the fragile life inside from the venomous gaze of Victoria Vance.
Victoria, pristine in her bespoke cream trench coat, held a clenched fist at her side. Her knuckles were white, trembling with an aristocratic rage that barely masked something much more desperate: pure panic. At Elena’s knees lay a freshly turned mound of dark earth, blanketed by wilting white roses and a single, polished silver signet ring cast into the mud.
"Did you honestly think you could hide this from me, you pathetic little maid?" Victoria hissed, her voice slicing through the foggy hush. Her pointed leather heel dug into the dirt just inches from Elena's trembling knees. "Did you think you could carry his bastard into the light and usurp everything my family built?"
Elena spit a bead of copper-tasting blood onto the sodden earth. Her long, dark hair clung to her pale neck in wet, matted strands. "It’s not... what you think, Victoria," she gasped, her voice raw and ragged against the damp air. "I never wanted... any of this. I only wanted to leave."
"You don't get to leave!" Victoria snarled, stepping closer, raising her hand once more to strike the helpless girl. "You rot here, beside his sins!"
"Get your hands off her."
The command was not shouted. It was delivered in a voice carved from arctic ice and raw authority—a dark baritone that instantly froze the air in Victoria’s throat.
Victoria whipped her head around, her blue eyes widening in sudden, unadulterated horror.
Cutting through the gray veil of mist came Damian Sterling. He looked like an apparition risen from the crypts: tall, commanding, clad in an impeccably tailored black Italian suit. His white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the throat, revealing the sinister edge of an intricate black tattoo curling over his collarbone. Behind him, parked silently on the gravel perimeter, sat an armored black SUV, its engine purring like a caged predator.
Elena looked up, her vision blurred by tears and rain. Damian Sterling was supposed to be in Geneva—or so Victoria’s father had told everyone when the patriarch died three days ago. Damian was a ghost of a past Elena had prayed never to encounter again.
"What are you doing here?" Elena whispered, trembling harder now, caught between two predators.
Damian ignored Victoria entirely. He closed the distance in deliberate, measured strides, stepping right into the mud without a glance at his polished shoes. He dropped to one knee before Elena. His large, gloved hand reached out, gently cupping her chin to tilt her face toward him, his dark eyes surveying the fresh cut on her lip with terrifying calm.
"No one touches what belongs to me," he said softly, every syllable thick with a promise of carnage.
He slowly rose and turned his gaze upward toward Victoria. Victoria took a stumbling step backward into the headstones, clutching her designer coat tightly around her throat.
"Damian," Victoria stammered, her voice shaking violently. "You... you don't understand. She's carrying an heir. She's carrying—"
"I know exactly whose child she carries, Victoria," Damian interrupted, his lips curving into a humorless smile. "And that is why you have precisely ten seconds to walk away before I bury you beside my father."
Victoria didn't hesitate. Gathering her coat, she turned and fled into the fog, the sharp clicks of her heels fading into the distance.
Damian knelt back down beside Elena. He reached out to lift her from the frozen earth, but Elena flinched away, clutching her belly with sudden agony.
"Don't touch me," she gasped, pain twisting her features as a sharp spasm ripped through her lower stomach. "You know what happened that night. You can't claim him."
Damian caught her wrists with effortless strength, pulling her gently against his chest. His thumb traced the blood on her lip, his gaze smoldering with dark obsession.

"You spent eight months running from my shadow, little sparrow," he murmured into her hair. "You think you can stop me now? This baby isn't your ticket to freedom. It is your chain to me."
Before she could scream, Damian scooped her up into his arms, carrying her toward the waiting vehicle. But as the car door swung open, Elena saw the leather-bound document resting on the leather seat: an arrest warrant signed with her name.
