Chapter 3 - Siege in the Fog

The deafening crack of a high-caliber sniper rifle shattered the silence of Blackwood Manor. The reinforced glass of the master bedroom shuddered, a spiderweb of cracks blooming across the center of the pane, though it held against the impact.

"Down!" Damian roared, lunging across the room and pulling Elena from the bed just as a second bullet pulverized the ornate plaster moulding above the headboard.

Elena screamed, clutching her stomach as Damian hauled her onto the plush Persian rug beneath the heavy mahogany desk. Dr. Aris was already on her knees, diving for her medical bag while the alarm sirens began their rhythmic, mournful wail throughout the massive estate.

"Marcus!" Damian barked into his lapel communicator, his voice terrifyingly calm despite the chaos. "Status!"

"Breach at the southern entrance, sir!" Marcus's voice crackled through the static, accompanied by the violent chatter of automatic gunfire echoing from the lower floors. "Victoria hired the Ironwood Syndicate. They came with armored transports and heavy ordnance. They aren't trying to negotiate—they’re trying to burn the manor to the ground!"

"Eliminate them all," Damian commanded, unholstering a sleek matte-black handgun from beneath his jacket with practiced fluidity. "No survivors. Secure the lower armory."

He clicked off the channel and turned to Elena. She was hyperventilating, her fingernails digging through his dress pants into his thigh as another violent wave of labor pains seized her abdomen.

"Damian... the baby," she sobbed, sweat plastering her dark hair to her forehead. "Something is wrong. It hurts... it hurts too much."

Dr. Aris crawled over to them, checking Elena’s vitals with trembling hands. "Her blood pressure is through the roof. If we don't deliver within the hour, she will hemorrhage, and the child will asphyxiate. We need a sterile environment, Damian! We can't do this under active fire!"

"The safe room in the sublevel," Damian said immediately. He looked at Elena, his dark eyes ablaze with an intensity she had never seen before. It wasn't the cold arrogance of the patriarch; it was the raw, primal fury of a man whose world was under siege. "Look at me, Elena."

Elena blinked through the tears, forced to meet his gaze.

"You are going to survive this. Your son is going to survive this," he promised, his voice low and vibrating with absolute certainty. "I am going to get you down to that bunker, and then I am going to end Victoria Vance once and for all. Do you trust me?"

"No!" she wept, trembling. "I don't trust you! You destroyed Julian!"

Damian’s jaw tightened, a flash of profound sorrow crossing his face before it was instantly buried beneath stone-cold resolve. "Then live long enough to hate me. Hold on to me."

Without waiting for an answer, he hooked his arm beneath her knees and lifted her against his chest, keeping his body between her and the window. With his other hand raised, weapon ready, he kicked open the master bedroom door and moved into the smoke-filled hallway.

The sounds of violence were deafening. Gunfire reverberated up the grand stairwell, mixed with the shouting of men and the sickening thuds of bodies falling against marble. The power flickered, dying out completely before the red emergency backup generators hummed to life, casting long, bloody shadows across the oil paintings and classic statues lining the corridor.

"Hold!" Damian hissed, flattening his back against the wall at the junction of the east wing.

Dr. Aris huddled behind them, terrified.

Around the corner stepped two men dressed in tactical gear, their submachine guns raised. Before they could register Damian’s presence, he stepped out, his weapon barking twice with terrifying precision. Both men collapsed instantly, dead before they hit the carpet.

Elena gasped, hiding her face against Damian’s chest. The smell of gunsmoke was acrid and thick, burning her throat. Damian didn't pause; he stepped over the bodies, his heavy leather shoes making no sound as he hurried toward the reinforced service elevator at the end of the wing.

"Almost there," he muttered, feeling her shivering violently in his grip. Her forehead was burning hot against his neck. "Stay with me, sparrow."

They reached the heavy steel elevator door. Damian entered a seven-digit code on the biometric scanner, followed by his palm print. The steel doors slid open with a heavy hydraulic hiss, revealing the private shaft that bypassed the main house straight to the reinforced fallout shelter beneath the foundation.

"Get in, Doctor," Damian ordered.

Dr. Aris scrambled inside, dragging her medical kit. Damian gently placed Elena on the built-in padded bench inside the elevator. She whimpered, curling into a ball, her hands wrapped defensively around her pregnant belly.

"You're not coming?" Elena whispered, looking up at him as he remained standing outside in the corridor.

Damian adjusted the magazine in his firearm, his face illuminated by the crimson glow of the emergency lights. "The automated locks must be engaged from the exterior terminal to seal the blast doors completely. Otherwise, their explosives will breach the shaft."

"Damian..." She didn't know why his name slipped from her lips with such desperation. He was her captor, the man who had torn her life apart. Yet, as he stood there between her and certain death, she felt a terrifying void open in her chest.

"Deliver the boy, Doctor," Damian ordered, looking directly at Dr. Aris. "If either of them dies, there is nowhere on this earth you will be able to hide from me."

"I will do everything I can, Mr. Sterling," the doctor replied, her voice trembling.

Damian looked down at Elena one last time. For a split second, the coldness vanished entirely, replaced by something ancient and wounded. "Julian didn't drive off that cliff, Elena. Victoria cut his brakes. I wasn't able to save him. But I will save you."

May you like

Before she could process his words, Damian hit the emergency lock panel. The heavy steel doors slammed shut, sealing her in darkness as the elevator began its descent.

A muffled explosion rocked the shaft above them, followed by the distant sound of automatic rifle fire directly outside the elevator doors they had just left behind.
