Chapter 14 - The Valley of the Sun

The sound of gunfire echoed down the stone aqueduct like thunder rolling through a crypt.

Elena ran through the freezing, ankle-deep water of the subterranean conduit, her legs burning, her breath catching in raw, ragged gasps. Tariq led the way with a tactical light, while Dr. Aris ran close behind Elena, holding her arm to keep her from stumbling on the slick Roman masonry. Against Elena’s chest, the baby was quiet, lulled by the rhythmic, desperate pace of his mother's heartbeat.

Behind them, deep in the belly of the ruined Kasbah, the battle raged with savage intensity.

The rhythmic, heavy thumps of Damian’s customized tactical rifle barked in distinct, lethal patterns, answered by the frantic, chaotic chatter of the Cerberus team's submachine guns. Then came the deafening roar of a C4 detonation—a concussive blast that traveled miles through the stone pipe, spraying dust from the ancient ceiling.

"Damian..." Elena sobbed, stumbling against the stone wall, her hand instinctively reaching back toward the darkness.

"Do not stop, Elena!" Tariq commanded, his voice raw with urgency as he caught her shoulder and pulled her forward. "If you stop now, his blood was spilled for nothing! Move!"

They pushed forward through the dark for what felt like miles, the tunnel sloping downward until the air grew fresher, carrying the crisp scent of pine, wild lavender, and morning dew.

Ahead, the aqueduct ended in a rusted iron grating overlooking a sun-drenched gorge.

Tariq kicked the corroded hinges with all his strength. With a loud groan of oxidized metal, the grate gave way, tumbling fifty feet down into the lush mountain valley below.

They scrambled out onto a rocky ledge.

The morning sun was just cresting the jagged peaks of the Rif Mountains, bathing the valley in glorious, golden light. Far below, winding along a dusty mountain road, sat two nondescript sand-colored land cruisers, guarded by Tariq’s local mountain allies.

Elena collapsed onto her knees upon the soft, pine-needle earth, gasping for air. She loosened the sling around her chest and looked down at her son. The morning sun illuminated his tiny face. His dark hazel eyes were wide open, looking up at the canopy of green pines and the bright blue sky above, completely unharmed.

"He's safe, Elena," Dr. Aris said gently, kneeling beside her, placing a comforting hand on her trembling shoulder. "You got him out. You survived."

Elena looked back up toward the towering ridge where the smoke from the Kasbah rose into the morning sky. The gunfire had stopped. The valley was silent, save for the whisper of the mountain wind through the pines.

"He's gone, isn't he?" Elena whispered, a terrible, hollow void opening in her chest. "He stayed behind to die."

Tariq stood at the edge of the cliff, his binoculars raised toward the burning ruins on the summit. His jaw was clenched tight, his aristocratic face an unreadable mask.

"Damian Sterling is the most dangerous predator this world has ever seen, Elena," Tariq said quietly, lowering the binoculars. "I have seen him survive three gunshot wounds to the chest. I have seen him walk out of a burning compound in Bogota with an entire cartel dead at his feet. But no man... no man could survive forty tons of collapsing limestone."

Tariq turned back to her, extending his hand. "Come. The border to Ceuta is open. In four hours, we will be in Spain."

Elena let Tariq pull her to her feet. She looked down at the valley, then at the burning mountain one last time. A profound, aching sorrow washed over her, but beneath it lay something new, forged in the fires of the last three days: an unbreakable, ferocious strength.

She was no longer the terrified maid from Saint Jude's graveyard. She was a mother who had walked through hell to deliver her child into the light.

"Let's go," she said softly.

They hiked down the winding goat trails to the waiting vehicles. Within minutes, the land cruisers were speeding along the coastal highway toward the northernmost tip of Morocco.

By midday, they had crossed the heavily fortified border into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta without incident, Tariq’s diplomatic papers clearing their passage without a single question from customs officials. At the harbor, a private ninety-foot yacht, the Stella Maris, sat docked at the private pier, its engines humming softly, prepared for the crossing of the Mediterranean.

Elena stood on the aft deck as the yacht slipped out of the harbor, watching the African coastline recede into the blue haze of the horizon.

The Mediterranean was calm, sparkling like a blanket of crushed diamonds beneath the midday sun. Dr. Aris was inside the salon, preparing infant formula, while Tariq stood near the helm, speaking in low, hushed tones on a satellite phone.

Elena looked down at her sleeping son, gently tracing the soft curve of his jaw.

"Your name is Julian Damian Sterling," she whispered into the wind. "You carry the soul of a martyr and the strength of a king. And no one will ever put you in a cage."

From the cabin doorway, Tariq walked out onto the teak deck, his expression intensely grave. He held out the satellite phone toward her.

"Elena," Tariq said, his voice trembling slightly.

Elena turned, her heart skipping a beat. "What is it? Did the authorities track the yacht?"

"It’s not the authorities," Tariq whispered, his dark eyes wide with an emotion she had never seen on him: absolute, unadulterated awe. "A secure line just pinged our encrypted receiver from a satellite relay in Gibraltar."

Elena’s breath caught in her throat. She slowly reached out, her fingers trembling as she took the cold plastic receiver and held it to her ear.

"Hello?" she whispered.

May you like

Across the static of an untraceable military-grade satellite connection, came a low, gravelly, agonizingly familiar baritone.

"I told you, little sparrow..." Damian rasped, breathing heavily through the sound of a roaring speedboat engine cutting through open water behind them. "...I never break a promise to my family."
