Chapter 4 - The Vault of Echoes

The hydraulic descent seemed to last an eternity. Inside the elevator cab, the dim amber lights flickered erratically as concussive rumbles traveled down through the bedrock. Elena lay on the cushioned bench, her breathing shallow, each inhale tasting of dust and the sharp copper tang of her own bitten lip.

"Lie flat, Elena. Breathe through the contractions," Dr. Aris commanded, her voice regaining a clinical, brisk edge as survival instincts took over. She snapped open her aluminum medical case, laying out sterile scalpels, clamps, and syringes on a stainless-steel tray built into the elevator wall. "Three deep breaths. In through your nose, out through your mouth."

"He said... Victoria killed Julian," Elena gasped, tears tracking through the dirt on her cheeks. "All this time, Damian told me Julian was reckless... that Julian abandoned the family..."

"Damian tells people what keeps them alive," Dr. Aris said grimly, pulling a pair of surgical scissors from a sterilization pouch. "Julian was soft. He had a poet's heart in a house built by wolves. When he found out Victoria’s father was laundering cartel money through the Sterling charities, he threatened to go to the federal authorities. Victoria couldn't let that happen. But Julian’s death nearly destroyed Damian."

The elevator shuddered to a halt with a heavy pneumatic groan. The heavy blast doors slid open, revealing the subterranean vault.

It was not a dingy cellar; it was an underground fortress. Floor-to-ceiling monitors lined one wall, displaying security feeds of the manor above, while the rest of the space was outfitted like an advanced surgical suite, complete with an incubator, oxygen tanks, and an autonomous generator that hummed steadily in the background.

"Up," Dr. Aris instructed, helping Elena stumble from the elevator toward the examination table.

Elena gripped the edge of the operating table as an agonizing pain ripped through her abdomen—hot, tearing, and merciless. A low cry tore from her throat, her knees buckling beneath her.

"The water broke," Dr. Aris said, quickly examining the fluid pooling on the linoleum floor. Her face darkened under the surgical lights. "Meconium staining. The baby is in severe distress. Elena, we cannot do a natural delivery. The umbilical cord may be compressed. I have to perform an emergency Caesarean section right now."

"No... no anesthesia? Can you do that here?" Elena sobbed, sheer terror overtaking the physical pain.

"I have local nerve blocks and sedatives, but there is no time for an epidural to settle properly," the doctor said, prepping a massive syringe with fluid. "You will feel pressure, and you will feel pain, but if I don't get this child out in the next eight minutes, he will not breathe."

"Do it," Elena whispered, clamping her eyes shut. "Save him. Please, just save my baby."

Dr. Aris worked with terrifying speed. She secured Elena’s arms with soft restraints, swabbed her swollen belly with cold, orange-brown antiseptic, and injected the local anesthetic directly into the tissue. Elena cried out as the needles pierced her skin, her body convulsing against the table.

Across the room, the security monitors flickered.

Elena turned her head weakly, her vision swimming with tears, and caught sight of the central monitor. It showed the grand foyer of the manor above.

Bodies lay strewn across the black-and-white checkered marble floor. Smoke was billowing from the shattered grand entryway. In the center of the carnage stood Damian.

His suit jacket was gone. His white dress shirt was shredded and soaked in crimson, both his own blood and that of the men he had cut down. He was holding an assault rifle, firing single, disciplined shots into the smoke. But he was surrounded. Four men in heavy tactical armor were advancing up the dual staircase, pinning him behind the marble statue of his ancestors.

From behind the tactical team walked Victoria Vance. She held a silver semi-automatic pistol in her manicured hand, her cream coat splattered with mud and soot, her face twisted in manic triumph.

"Damian..." Elena breathed, her fingernails tearing at the leather restraints.

"Look away, Elena! Focus on me!" Dr. Aris barked, holding a scalpel over the surgical field. "I am making the incision now!"

A sharp, searing line of agony cut across Elena's lower abdomen. Even with the local anesthetic, the sensation of cold steel cleaving through muscle made her scream—a raw, guttural shriek that echoed off the cold concrete walls of the vault. The pain was an ocean, threatening to drown her mind completely.

On the screen, Victoria pointed her weapon directly at Damian's chest. Damian stepped out from behind the cover, his rifle empty, casting the useless weapon aside. He was bleeding heavily from his shoulder and his side, barely keeping his footing.

Elena watched through a haze of agony as Victoria raised her gun, her lips moving on the silent camera feed, speaking words of venomous finality.

"The head is out," Dr. Aris shouted, her arms buried to the wrists in crimson, fighting against the clock. "Come on, little one. Breathe!"

Elena pulled against the straps, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Damian!" she screamed at the ceiling, as if her voice could penetrate forty feet of solid granite and steel.

On the monitor above, Victoria pulled the trigger. Damian's body jerked violently backward against the stone wall, collapsing onto the blood-soaked stairs.

At the very same instant, a loud, piercing wail cut through the subterranean chamber.

A baby's cry.

Dr. Aris lifted the tiny, squirming, blood-slick infant into the air, quickly clearing his airway. "He's breathing! It's a boy, Elena! He's alive!"

Elena looked toward the child, relief washing over her for a fleeting second, before her eyes darted back to the monitor. Victoria was smiling down at Damian's motionless body. Then, she turned her gaze directly toward the hidden security camera, pointed her finger toward the floor, and signaled to her men.
