Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Patriarch

The sound of Victoria's voice was like shards of broken glass dragging across stone. She looked feral, her polished aristocratic facade entirely shattered. Her cream coat was scorched black at the hem, her blonde hair disheveled, and her manicured hands trembled violently around the grip of the revolver.

"Move an inch, Damian, and I paint this elevator with what’s left of your mind," she spat, taking a ragged breath. She stepped over the threshold into the vault, her wild blue eyes darting toward Elena and the bundle wrapped tightly against her chest.

Damian remained on his knees, his broad shoulders heaving with every agonizing breath. Blood dripped steadily from his jaw onto the concrete, but his eyes—fixed on the floor—burned with lethal patience.

"You've lost, Victoria," Damian said, his voice a gravelly rumble. "The perimeter team... Marcus and his men... they wiped out your mercenary squad. You’re alone in this house."

"I don't need an army to pull a trigger!" she screamed, gesturing wildly with the gun. "I only need to kill you, kill that whore, and burn that bastard infant until there's nothing left for the probate courts to test! Everything belongs to the Vance family! It was our money that built this empire, and your father stole it!"

"My father didn't steal it," Damian murmured, slowly shifting his weight onto his back foot. "Your father gambled it away on shipping lanes that didn't exist. He begged my father to bail him out. He traded you for our debt, Victoria. You were never meant to be Julian’s wife. You were collateral."

Victoria’s face twisted into an expression of sheer madness. "Liar!" she shrieked, cocking the hammer of the revolver back with a heavy click.

Elena didn't think. The maternal instinct that had slumbered beneath months of fear and servitude erupted with blinding fury.

"Leave him alone!" Elena screamed.

With a surge of adrenaline that ripped through her fresh surgical stitches, Elena grabbed the heavy stainless-steel surgical tray from the table beside her and hurled it with all her strength straight at Victoria's face.

Scalpels, clamps, and antiseptic bottles clattered through the air. Victoria instinctively ducked, raising her arm to shield her face.

It was the fraction of a second Damian needed.

With the explosive speed of a striking viper, Damian surged upward from his knees. His massive left hand clamped around Victoria’s wrist, forcing the barrel of the gun toward the concrete ceiling.

A shot exploded into the darkness, the bullet ricocheting harmlessly off the reinforced beams above.

Victoria screamed as Damian twisted her arm with sickening leverage. The sound of bone snapping echoed through the vault, followed by the dull clatter of the revolver hitting the floor. Damian did not stop; his other hand closed around Victoria’s throat, lifting the aristocratic woman off her feet and slamming her spine against the reinforced steel frame of the elevator.

"You killed my brother," Damian whispered, his face inches from hers, his voice devoid of all humanity. "You struck the mother of my nephew. And you threatened the bloodline of this house."

Victoria choked, clawing frantically at his iron grip, her face turning purple. Her heels kicked uselessly against his shins. "D-Damian... please..." she gurgled.

"There is no mercy left in this house," he said.

With a cold, precise jerk of his wrists, Damian slammed her sideways into the high-voltage breaker panel that had been exposed by the thermite blast. A blinding cascade of blue electric sparks engulfed Victoria’s body as forty thousand volts surged through the compromised wiring. She convulsed violently for three seconds, letting out a horrific, garbled scream, before the breaker tripped, plunging the vault into darkness once more.

Victoria slumped to the floor in a smoking, lifeless heap.

Silence fell over the subterranean room, thick and absolute, broken only by the soft, frightened whimpering of the baby.

Damian stood over the body for a long moment, chest heaving, before turning slowly to face Elena. The emergency flare burning in the elevator shaft cast long, demonic shadows across his blood-soaked face.

Elena stood frozen, clutching her son against her heart, her bare feet standing in the spreading cold of the concrete floor. She looked at Damian—this man who was half-beast, half-god, who had butchered an entire strike team and broken a woman’s neck with his bare hands to reach her.

"Damian..." she whispered, her voice shaking.

Damian took one step toward her. Then another. He reached up, his bloody fingers unhooking the silver chain from around his neck. The heavy iron key swung between them, glinting in the faint crimson light.

He held it out to her.

"The... the river tunnel," Damian rasped, his knees buckling beneath him. He collapsed heavily against the edge of the operating table, struggling to remain conscious. "Take the boy. The hatch is behind... behind the generator. Follow the current west. Marcus has a safe house... at the harbor."

Elena stared at the key in his bloody palm, then at his face. For the first time, she saw the mortal vulnerability beneath his terrifying armor. He wasn't trying to cage her. He was handing her the lock.

"Why?" she asked, tears choking her throat. "You said he was your chain to me. You said he belonged to you."

Damian looked up at her, his dark eyes softening into something raw, broken, and agonizingly honest.

"He is Julian's son," Damian whispered, blood bubbling at the corner of his lips. "And you... you were the only thing in this world that Julian truly loved. Which means... you are the only thing in this world worth dying for."

His eyes rolled back, and Damian Sterling collapsed facedown onto the cold floor, completely unresponsive.
