Chapter 10 - The Visiting Room

The fluorescent lighting of the maximum-security federal holding facility buzzed with a harsh, unyielding hum that grated on the nerves. The visiting room was small, smelling of industrial disinfectant and stale institutional coffee. Behind a thick sheet of reinforced ballistic glass sat Eleanor Sterling.

She looked a shadow of her former self. The immaculate white designer suits and perfectly styled silver hair were gone, replaced by a standard-issue orange jumpsuit and unkempt, shoulder-length hair that lacked its usual professional volume. Yet, even behind the glass, the venom in her eyes remained entirely undiminished.

Clara stood on the other side of the glass, holding the black telephone receiver connected to the visitation intercom. She looked down at Eleanor with a cool, detached composure that completely unnerved the older woman.

“You have a lot of nerve showing your face here,” Eleanor’s voice crackled through the speaker, harsh and distorted by the poor audio quality. “You think this little coup of yours makes you powerful? You’re just a temporary placeholder. The board only supports you because Vance is backing your plays. The moment he discards you, you’ll be right back on the pavement where I left you.”

Clara didn't flinch. She adjusted her grip on the receiver, her voice calm, measured, and effortlessly quiet.

“Julian isn't backing my plays, Eleanor. We’re building an empire together,” Clara replied evenly. “And as for the board—they don't support me out of fear. They support me because I hold the majority shares, the legal deeds, and the moral high ground you spent thirty years trying to dynamite.”

Eleanor slammed her palm against the glass partition, a feral snarl twisting her features. “I raised you! I gave you a roof over your head! I gave you my son’s name!”

“You bought me to keep your secrets buried,” Clara corrected, her eyes narrowing slightly. “And you threw me out because you thought I was weak. That was your final mistake, Eleanor. You forgot that people who have survived the bottom have nothing left to fear from the top.”

Eleanor stared at her through the glass, her chest heaving as realization finally sank in. There were no more threats she could make, no more legal loopholes she could exploit, no more family ties she could weaponize. Her reign was over, permanently and irrevocably.

“Enjoy your cage, Eleanor,” Clara said softly. “I have a company to run.”

Without waiting for a response, Clara hung up the receiver, turned on her heel, and walked out of the visiting room without looking back.
