Chapter 6 - Unraveling the Web

The heavy silence in the boardroom was broken only by the hum of the centralized air conditioning. Henderson’s trembling fingers traced the embossed seal on the parchment document, his eyes darting between Clara’s composed, unblinking expression and Eleanor’s frantic, mottled face. The other board members leaned in, whispering urgently among themselves as the foundations of their corporate security began to crumble in real-time.

“This is an outrage!” Eleanor shrieked, her aristocratic composure finally shattering completely as she realized her decades-long cover-up was unraveling in a matter of minutes. She pointed a shaking finger at Henderson. “Don’t look at that garbage! It’s a forged document fabricated by Vance to facilitate a hostile takeover! Security, I want these intruders dragged out of this building immediately!”

“Sit down, Eleanor,” Julian repeated, his voice dangerously quiet as he leaned back in his chair, resting his fingers together in front of him. “The security guards outside stopped taking your calls twenty minutes ago. As for hostile takeovers, we aren't taking over anything. We’re simply repossessing what was stolen from the rightful heir when you and your late husband staged a coup in this very room twenty-five years ago.”

Henderson looked up from the papers, his voice heavy with a mixture of guilt and long-suppressed remorse. “She’s right, Eleanor. I signed the suppression order back then, but I was told Clara didn't survive the car crash that took Arthur’s life. We were told the bloodline was entirely extinct.”

“And you believed them without checking the hospital records?” Clara asked, her voice cutting like a scalpel. She stood up slowly, leaning forward against the back of her chair, her gaze fixed entirely on the older man who had once been her grandfather’s most trusted advisor. “Or were you simply paid enough to look the other way while they stripped my family name from every asset in this portfolio?”

Henderson flinched, unable to meet her eyes.

Julian slid a second file across the table—a thick compilation of bank statements, offshore wire transfers, and property deeds bearing Eleanor’s personal signature over the last decade. “We’ve spent the last six months tracing every single dollar siphoned from the Vance estate accounts into private Swiss holdings controlled by the Sterling family trust. Every dividend, every real estate holding, every subsidiary—it’s all documented here.”

Eleanor’s eyes widened as she caught sight of the folder. She lunged forward with surprising speed, trying to sweep the documents off the table, but Julian was faster. He caught her wrist mid-air with a grip of iron, forcing her back upright.

“Ah-ah, Eleanor,” Julian warned, his eyes flashing with dark amusement. “Destroying corporate evidence is a federal offense. I’m sure the SEC would love to audit your personal accounts next.”

Clara walked slowly around the table, her heels clicking rhythmically against the floor until she stood directly opposite Eleanor. The height difference was negligible now; the aura of power had entirely shifted. Clara reached down, picked up her single white slipper that she had stashed in her designer tote bag, and placed it gently on the edge of the mahogany table right in front of Eleanor.

“You told me last night that I was leaving empty-handed,” Clara whispered, her face inches from the older woman’s. “You were wrong, Eleanor. I’m taking everything.”

Before Eleanor could formulate a response, the heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open with a sharp click. Two federal agents in dark suits stepped into the room, flashing their badges toward the stunned board members.

“Eleanor Sterling?” the lead agent announced calmly. “You’re coming with us for questioning regarding corporate fraud, asset concealment, and obstruction of justice.”
