Chapter 11 - The Phantom Threat

The heavy oak doors of Clara’s private office closed with a soft, pneumatic hiss, shutting out the relentless hum of the corporate hive below. She walked over to her desk, tossing her leather portfolio onto the blotter, and let out a long, weary sigh. Even though Eleanor was behind bars and the corporate audit was proceeding according to plan, a strange, persistent unease had settled in the back of her mind over the past twenty-four hours.
Her phone buzzed on the desk. It was an alert from the corporate security desk downstairs: an unidentified visitor had attempted to access the sixty-fifth-floor elevator bank using a decommissioned executive security card belonging to one of Eleanor’s former associates.
Before Clara could dial security to dispatch guards to the lobby, the private office door swung open without a knock.
Julian stepped inside, his expression grim, holding a heavy manila folder under his arm. He locked the door behind him with a sharp click, sliding the deadbolt into place.
“You got the alert,” Julian stated flatly, tossing the folder onto the desk in front of her.
Clara looked up, her instincts sharpening instantly. “Who tried to use the card?”
“Not an employee,” Julian said, pulling out a set of glossy surveillance photographs captured by the subterranean parking garage cameras. He slid them across the desk. “Take a look.”
Clara leaned forward, her eyes scanning the black-and-white images. In the center of the frame was a tall, heavily tattooed man in a worn leather vest, walking casually past the restricted parking bays near the private elevator lobby. He had long dark hair, a rugged beard, and an air of dangerous confidence that contrasted sharply with the pristine corporate environment of Vance Global Holdings.
“Who is he?” Clara asked, her heart skipping a beat as she recognized the distinct insignia stitched onto the back of his leather vest—a symbol associated with an underground syndicate that had operated on the fringes of the city’s shipping ports for decades.
“That’s Jax,” Julian replied grimly, pulling out a printed dossier from the folder. “According to our intelligence, he isn't just a biker. He’s the enforcer who handled Eleanor’s off-the-books asset recovery and intimidation campaigns whenever the legal system couldn't reach her targets.”
Clara stared at the photograph of Jax, her mind racing back to her childhood memories and the whispered rumors she had overheard late at night in the Sterling mansion. Eleanor hadn't just relied on lawyers and accountants to protect her empire; she had maintained a network of shadow operatives to eliminate anyone who got too close to the truth.
“If Jax is here in the building,” Clara whispered, looking up at Julian with wide eyes, “it means Eleanor didn't tell us everything before she went down. There’s another asset—or another secret—she’s still trying to protect.”

“Or,” Julian added darkly, leaning down so his face was inches from hers, “he’s here to finish what Eleanor started.”
