Chapter 14 - The Sovereign of Stone

By midday, the front steps of the Grand Aurelia were swarming with international press.

Dozens of camera crews fought for position behind the brass barricades, their lenses focused on the massive wrought-iron doors. Headlines across the globe flashed with the sensational resurgence of the Vale heiress: THE GHOST OF THE GRAND AURELIA RESURFACES, THE STERLING CONSPIRACY UNRAVELS, A BILLION-DOLLAR RETURN FROM THE GRAVE.

Inside the executive boardroom on the twentieth floor—untouched by the violence of the night before—Charlotte stood before a floor-to-ceiling mirror.

She was no longer wearing the blood-stained beige linen shirt or scuffed flat shoes. She wore a tailored black wool suit with sharp, structured shoulders, a crisp white silk blouse, and minimalist gold cuff links that had belonged to her father. The bruise on her cheekbone remained, a dark, violet shadow against her pale skin, but she refused to let the hotel makeup artist conceal it with foundation.

“Let them see it,” she had said simply. “Let them remember who threw the first punch.”

Behind her, a team of forensic accountants and corporate attorneys sat around the forty-foot mahogany conference table, paper files spread out like battle maps.

“Miss Vale,” the senior partner said, adjusting his spectacles. “We have successfully frozen eighty-two percent of the Sterling domestic holdings. However, the private banking trust in Geneva—the one linked to the maritime shipping routes—requires a physical signature and biometric verification within seventy-two hours, or the remaining capital will automatically liquidate into an untraceable blind trust.”

Charlotte turned away from the mirror, her expression entirely composed. “Book the private transport for tomorrow morning. Who is the executor of that Geneva account?”

The attorney hesitated, clearing his throat nervously. “The public record names a legal firm. But the private charter documents list an individual. An elderly woman residing in Zurich.”

Charlotte’s eyes narrowed slightly. “What name?”

“Eleanor Vale,” the attorney read from the parchment. “Your father’s sister. The one who supposedly died in the Alps twenty-five years ago.”

A heavy silence descended upon the boardroom.

Charlotte walked over to the head of the table, placing her hands flat against the polished wood. She looked down at the documents, her heart beating with a steady, dangerous rhythm.

Her father had not just built a vault beneath this hotel; he had built a labyrinth that spanned two continents, designed to protect a secret far larger than commercial real estate or local political kickbacks.

Before she could speak, her private encrypted phone buzzed against the table. An unknown number flashed on the screen with a Swiss country code.

Charlotte picked it up, pressing it to her ear without a word.

A woman’s voice, raspy with age yet dripping with refined aristocratic venom, spoke through the line:

“You made quite a mess of the wedding, Charlotte. Your father always was prone to melodramatic theatrics.”
