CROWN OF GLASS AND ASHES / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4 - The Vault Beneath the Stone

The floor shuddered again, and several women in the rear of the ballroom dropped to their knees, weeping hysterically. The scent of ozone and scorched copper drifted up through the ornate brass ventilation grates set into the wainscoting.

Charlotte’s gaze sharpened. “He’s purging the servers.”

“Miss Vale, that level of detonation means industrial incendiaries,” Captain Vance warned, stepping in front of her. “The sub-levels are likely compromised. Toxic gas from the cooling units could fill the shafts in minutes.”

“My father’s personal logs are in the secondary safe behind the cooling manifold,” Charlotte said without looking back. “If Arthur burns those drives, the names of every corrupt official on the maritime board burn with them. Move.”

Leaving Julian slumped against the altar, Charlotte moved swiftly toward the concealed service entrance disguised behind a tapestry of the founding families. She slipped the leather dossier into Vance’s hands and took a tactical flashlight from his utility belt.

The narrow concrete staircase behind the tapestry spiraled downward into the bowels of the century-old landmark. With every step down, the ambient temperature plummeted, chilled by the massive industrial refrigeration units that cooled the subterranean server banks. The air smelled of burnt silicon, acrid and chemical.

At the bottom of the landing, a heavy steel blast door hung half-open, its hydraulic lock scorched and blackened by a thermite charge. Inside the vault room, rows of server racks were already melting into glowing mounds of slag, licking the air with toxic violet flames.

Standing in the center of the devastation, breathing heavily through a cloth handkerchief pressed to his mouth, was Arthur Sterling. He held an aluminum briefcase in one hand and a flare gun in the other, his tuxedo jacket discarded and his white shirt drenched in sweat and soot.

“You’re too late, Charlotte!” Arthur coughed, his voice hoarse from the smoke. “The digital ledger is gone. The property deeds, the debt assignments, the offshore accounts—all incinerated. You have a piece of paper, but without the private encryption keys stored on these drives, you can’t claim a single cent!”

Charlotte stepped through the smoke, completely unbothered by the flames dancing along the walls. “You always were an unimaginative thief, Arthur. You thought my father trusted digital drives?”

She reached up to her neck and unclipped a delicate platinum chain hidden beneath the high collar of her beige shirt. Dangling from the chain was a tarnished brass key with odd, irregular notches cut into its spine.

Arthur’s eyes bulged. The flare gun wavered in his grip. “The master lock... he said it was lost in the wreckage of the yacht.”

“He lied to you, just like you lied to the world,” Charlotte said. She pointed the flashlight beam directly at a heavy cast-iron safe embedded in the original foundation wall behind him. “Drop the case, Arthur. Or the next charge Vance’s team sets won’t be to clear doors—it will be to seal this vault with you inside it.”

Arthur’s face twisted in savage desperation. Instead of dropping the briefcase, he raised the flare gun and aimed it straight at Charlotte’s chest.
