Chapter 15 - Bloodlines in the Shadows

Charlotte didn't breathe for two full seconds. The sound of the voice on the other end of the line was like hearing a phantom whisper through an open crypt.

“Aunt Eleanor,” Charlotte said, her voice steady, cold, and entirely devoid of shock. “I was told your plane went down in the canton of Bern.”

A low, dry laugh echoed from the receiver, accompanied by the gentle clink of fine china against silver. “A convenient narrative for the press, my dear. One must die to the world if one wishes to manage the world’s true wealth without the vulgar inconvenience of public scrutiny.”

Charlotte signaled to Vance, who immediately pointed two fingers at the cyber technician at the end of the table. The technician began frantically tracing the satellite relay routing the call through European nodes.

“The Sterlings were your dogs,” Charlotte said, keeping the woman talking. “Arthur wasn't the architect. He was your errand boy.”

“Arthur was an arrogant, shortsighted peasant who grew greedy on the crumbs I allowed him to sweep from my table,” Eleanor replied dismissively. “He thought he could seize the Grand Aurelia for his own family line through that ridiculous wedding. He forced my hand, just as you did.”

“And Marcus?” Charlotte’s knuckles pressed white against the mahogany. “Did you order his dialysis stopped?”

A small, chilling pause lingered on the line before Eleanor answered. “Your father was sentimental, Charlotte. He believed in legacy, in justice, in building monuments out of brick and mortar. He couldn't accept that the world had moved past sovereign nations and family names into pure, borderless leverage. He had to be retired. But you... you have his fire, combined with an instinct for survival that I find rather... promising.”

“I am not your partner, Eleanor,” Charlotte said through clenched teeth. “I am the executor of my father’s estate. And I am coming to Geneva to tear your empire down stone by stone.”

“Then come, little sparrow,” Eleanor murmured, her voice smooth as chilled silk. “The private jet is already waiting at the tarmac. But before you board, I suggest you look outside your office door. A final gift from the Sterling wedding has just arrived.”

The call disconnected with a sharp tone.

At the exact same instant, the double oak doors of the boardroom clicked.

Captain Vance drew his weapon, motioning the attorneys to step back against the wall. The heavy doors swung slowly open on their brass hinges.

Standing in the doorway was a teenage courier boy in a grey hotel uniform, trembling violently, holding a sealed black velvet box tied with an ivory ribbon.

“M-Miss Vale...?” the boy stammered, looking terrified by the sight of Vance’s drawn gun. “A courier... a courier left this at the concierge desk thirty seconds ago. He said... he said it was the wedding gift you forgot to open.”

Vance stepped forward, using the barrel of his sidearm to carefully lift the lid of the velvet box.

Inside, resting on a bed of crushed red silk, lay Marcus Vale’s missing gold pocket watch, its hands frozen at exactly 11:42—the time of the fire twenty years ago.

And tucked beneath the watch was a small, ticking electronic transponder counting down from sixty seconds."
