Chapter 8 - Glass Rain

The concussive wave threw Charlotte backward across the rug, her ears ringing with a high-pitched, deafening squeal. Shards of safety glass rained down like jagged hail, shredding the velvet curtains and thudding into the mahogany furniture.
Through the ringing in her ears, Charlotte saw Captain Vance return fire instantly, the muzzle flash of his rifle illuminating the smoke-choked balcony in sharp, staccato bursts. Two figures in tactical helmets dropped onto the terrace, their carbines barking in return.
“Down! Stay down!” Vance bellowed, grabbing Judge Vance by the collar and dragging him behind the overturned grand piano.
Charlotte rolled behind a heavy marble console table just as a volley of automatic fire stitched across the plaster wall above her head, sending plumes of chalky dust billowing into the air.
Through the haze, she saw Julian Sterling step through the shattered terrace doors, flanked by three heavily armed contractors.
He wasn't wearing his wedding tuxedo jacket anymore. He wore a dark ballistic vest over his blood-stained dress shirt, holding a compact submachine gun with the casual familiarity of someone who had received military training, not prep-school fencing lessons. His aristocratic demeanor had completely dissolved, replaced by a cold, calculating detachment.
“You always had to be the hero, Charlotte,” Julian called out over the ringing silence, his voice amplified by the dead acoustics of the ruined suite. “Even when Marcus went down, you wouldn't just take the payout and move to Paris. You had to dig into the shipping manifests.”
Charlotte pressed her back against the cool marble of the console table, breathing deeply through her nose to steady her trembling hands. She felt the heavy brass key in her pocket.
“You killed my father, didn't you?” she said loudly, projecting her voice to disguise Vance’s tactical movements behind the piano.
Julian chuckled softly. “Marcus died of heart failure, technically. We just... restricted the oxygen flow during his final dialysis treatment. He was stubborn until the very end. Kept raving about how you would come back to strip everything from us.”
“And here I am,” Charlotte said.
“Yes, here you are,” Julian replied, gesturing to his men to advance on the piano. “And you brought Judge Vance right to us. A tragic murder-suicide on the twelfth floor of the Grand Aurelia. The unstable Vale heiress escapes an institution, murders the missing federal judge in a delusional rage, and falls from the penthouse balcony.”
He raised his weapon, taking aim at the corner of the marble console where Charlotte was hiding.
“Goodbye, my love,” Julian said.
May you like
A deafening crack shattered the room, but it didn't come from Julian’s gun.
A high-caliber sniper round tore through the remaining window frame, passing clean through the chest of the contractor standing directly to Julian’s right.
