Chapter 1 - The Cold Water Awakening

The chlorine burned Maddie’s throat, but the humiliation burned deeper. Water sloshed heavily in her designer pumps with every stride she took away from the illuminated edge of the pool. The laughter behind her dwindled, choked off by the sharp snap of her voice echoing across the travertine patio. Bradley’s smug grin had dissolved into panic the moment the Porsche key glinted between her dripping fingers.
Behind him stood Vanessa, his mother, holding her plastic cup mid-air, the malicious smirk frozen on her Botox-taut cheeks. They had planned this. It wasn’t a stumble; Bradley had deliberately clipped her shoulder to send her flying into four feet of chlorinated water before fifty of the city’s most influential socialites. To them, Maddie was just a docile orphan with an inexhaustible bank account, someone to be kept in her place while Bradley played the generous billionaire host.
""Maddie, get back here!"" Bradley’s voice echoed across the lawn, his hurried footsteps splashing through the wet trail she left behind. ""Don’t make a scene in front of the board members!""
Maddie didn't slow down. Her heavy, sequined gown dragged like lead around her calves, but her spine remained rigid. She pressed the key fob. The headlights of the obsidian-black Porsche Carrera flashed in the circular gravel driveway.
""I bought this estate, Bradley,"" she said without turning around, her voice razor-sharp in the cool evening breeze. ""I funded your startup. I paid for the catering, the champagne, and the very roof over your mother’s head. Tomorrow, you find out what life costs without me.""
""You’re being hysterical!"" Bradley caught her arm, his fingers digging into her wet skin. ""You think you can walk out and cut me off? We signed an agreement, remember? You signed over controlling interest in the trust during last month’s restructuring!""
Maddie pulled her arm free with such force that Bradley stumbled back into the hydrangeas. A cold, feral smile touched her wet lips. She opened the car door, threw her soaked clutch onto the leather passenger seat, and slid behind the wheel.
""Check your email, Bradley,"" Maddie said quietly, rolling down the window just an inch before locking the doors. ""The restructuring paperwork was never filed. My father’s lawyers aren’t dead—they were just waiting for you to get comfortable.""

She revved the engine, the twin-turbo flat-six roaring to life, drowning out his curses as gravel kicked up beneath her tires. As she sped down the winding private road, her soaked clutch buzzed violently against the leather console.
Maddie glanced down at the waterproof screen illuminating the dark interior. It wasn't Bradley. It was an unlisted number with a single encrypted message: The trap is sprung. Drive to the old dockhouse on Pier 4. We have your father’s real will.
