Chapter 12 - Fire on the Water

The Kane Maritime private helicopter touched down on the concrete apron of Pier 12 amidst blinding smoke and the deafening screech of emergency sirens. Fireboats sprayed massive arcs of white foam onto the smoldering hull of the Empress Vance, but the heat radiating from the cargo bay was so intense that the harbor water was literally boiling along the steel waterline.

Maddie leaped out of the cabin the instant the skids hit the asphalt, ducking beneath the spinning rotor blades. She had stripped off her red suit jacket, wearing only her silk shirt and trousers, her face smudged with soot.

Christian caught up to her, grabbing her shoulder. ""You can't go aboard! The structural integrity of the lower deck is compromised!""

""The manual shutoff valve for the liquid chemical tanks is inside the central pump room!"" Maddie shouted over the roar of the flames. ""Bradley’s digital virus bypassed the remote controls! It can only be tripped by hand with my father’s personal physical master key!""

She held up the silver chain around her neck. Suspended from the links was a notched titanium key her father had given her on her eighteenth birthday—a failsafe built into every vessel in the Vance fleet.

""I'm going with you,"" Christian said without hesitation, grabbing two emergency respirator masks from the staging fire truck.

""Christian, this isn't your company—""

""You are my wife,"" Christian interrupted, his slate eyes blazing with an unyielding intensity that silenced her protest. ""And nobody burns what belongs to us. Move!""

They sprinted up the gangway through the dense, acrid smoke. Inside the companionway, the steel walls groaned under the immense thermal stress. Emergency klaxons wailed in rhythm with the pulsing red lights overhead.

They descended three narrow flights of iron stairs into the bowels of the ship. The heat was suffocating, clawing through their clothes like an open furnace. Maddie strapped the respirator over her mouth and nose, her father's key gripped tightly in her right hand.

They reached the heavy bulkhead of the pump room. Through the reinforced viewport, Maddie could see the pressure gauges buried deep in the red zone. The main valve wheel was glowing faintly orange from the radiant heat of the adjacent compartment.

""The override lock is on the far wall!"" Maddie pointed, coughing as smoke leaked through the seals.

Christian slammed his shoulder against the pneumatic lever, forcing the heavy steel door open against the buckled frame. Heat hit them like a physical blow.

Maddie lunged toward the console, sliding the titanium key into the brass emergency cylinder.

Clack.

The lock engaged, but the heavy mechanical lever refused to budge, jammed by the expanding metal.

""It's stuck!"" Maddie yelled, throwing her entire body weight against the iron bar.

Christian shoved his boots against the deck plates, locking his hands over hers. ""On three! One... two... THREE!""

With a deafening groan of tortured steel, the lever snapped down.

A high-pressure hiss erupted through the overhead pipes as thousands of gallons of halogen suppressant flooded the solvent tanks. The roar of the fire abruptly choked off, replaced by the hissing rush of cooling steam. The temperature in the room plummeted.

Maddie collapsed against the bulkhead, sliding down to the damp metal grating, her chest heaving as she pulled the respirator off her face.

Christian dropped beside her, wiping a streak of black soot from his forehead. He looked at her, his usual stoic expression replaced by pure, raw admiration.

""You're completely insane,"" he whispered, a breathless smile breaking across his lips.

Maddie let out a ragged, triumphant laugh, leaning her head back against the cool iron wall. ""I told you, Christian. I'm my father's daughter.""

May you like

Before Christian could reply, the radio on his tactical vest crackled to life with an urgent report from the police precinct downtown:

“Mr. Kane! Priority alert! The transport convoy carrying Bradley Sterling was ambushed on Interstate 95! Sterling has been extracted by an armed militia! He’s on the run!”
