Chapter 9 - The Boardroom Coup

The boardroom of Vance Maritime on the 48th floor was bathed in harsh morning sunlight. Bradley Sterling sat at the head of the mahogany conference table, wearing an impeccably tailored navy suit. His hair was slicked back, a gold Rolex gleaming on his wrist. Beside him sat his mother, Vanessa, beaming with triumphant satisfaction as she organized the voting proxies.

Surrounding them were twelve senior board members, looking uneasy, their eyes darting toward the empty seat traditionally reserved for the Vance family heir.

""Ladies and gentlemen,"" Bradley announced, his voice smooth and authoritative. ""As you know, my dear fiancée Maddie has suffered an unfortunate... emotional collapse following the tragic passing of Richard. After a severe incident at our home last night, she is currently hospitalized and unfit to assume managerial duties.""

A murmur rippled through the room.

""Under the emergency provisions of the trust,"" Vanessa added, leaning forward, ""Bradley will assume the role of Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately. All that remains is your formal ratification.""

""Isn't that a bit premature, Bradley?"" an older director, Harold Vance, asked cautiously. ""We haven't received official medical confirmation from her physicians.""

""Harold, please,"" Bradley smiled condescendingly, sliding a forged document forward. ""I have the primary power of attorney right here. Maddie is incapable of signing her own name today. Now, shall we take the vote?""

Bradley raised his hand. ""All in favor—""

The heavy oak double doors of the boardroom swung open with an explosive crash that shook the glass walls.

The security guards stationed outside tumbled backward, followed by two armed men in Kane Security uniforms who secured the threshold. Walking through the doorway, her heels clicking like metronomic gunshots against the marble entryway, was Maddie Vance.

Beside her, tall, imposing, and exuding pure predatory dominance, walked Christian Kane.

Bradley’s hand froze in mid-air. The color drained from his face until he looked like a corpse in a tailored suit. Vanessa gasped, dropping her fountain pen onto the glass table, the ink splattering across the emergency proxy papers.

""You're late for the vote, Bradley,"" Maddie said, her voice clear, bell-like, and carrying a lethal chill through the stunned room.

She walked directly down the center aisle, her crimson suit catching the sunlight like a blaze of fire. She didn't look like a girl who had been pushed into a swimming pool twelve hours ago; she looked like an empress arriving to claim the throne.

""M-Maddie?"" Bradley stammered, scrambling to his feet, his chair screeching against the floor. ""You... you shouldn't be here. You’re supposed to be—""

""Dead?"" Maddie stopped at the foot of the table, resting two gloved hands on the mahogany surface. ""I'm sorry to disappoint your mother's tea-party plans, darling. But I don't die easily.""
