Chapter 15 - The Golden Dawn

The gunshot was deafening. Bradley gasped, his revolver tumbling from his limp fingers onto the concrete floor.

He looked down at his own chest in disbelief. A dark red stain was blooming rapidly through his navy dress shirt. Behind him, standing by the vault control console, Victoria Vance held a small, smoking derringer in her trembling hand.

""Victoria...?"" Bradley wheezed, falling to his knees, blood bubbling at the corners of his mouth.

""You were always a clumsy, emotional fool, Bradley,"" Victoria whispered, her voice devoid of human warmth. ""I promised you a share, not my freedom. You would have folded under federal interrogation within an hour.""

Victoria turned the tiny derringer toward Maddie. ""Now, Maddie... place your eye against that scanner and open the safe, or I swear on your father’s grave—""

A deafening crack shattered her sentence. Christian Kane’s round struck Victoria’s hand, the impact sending the derringer flying across the floor, shattering against the steel wall.

Christian stepped forward, kicking Bradley’s dropped revolver away and pinning Victoria against the concrete pillar with a forearm like an iron bar.

""Don't move,"" Christian ordered, his voice chillingly calm as the sound of boots echoed down the spiraling stairs. Marcus and a squad of federal marshals flooded the bunker, their weapons drawn, securing the perimeter within seconds.

Maddie walked slowly toward Bradley. He lay curled on his side, clutching his bleeding chest, his breathing shallow and ragged. The smug golden boy from the poolside party was gone; all that remained was a broken coward drowning in his own hubris.

He looked up at her through half-lidded eyes, reaching out a bloody hand toward her shoes. ""Maddie... please... call a doctor... I... I loved you...""

Maddie looked down at him, her face completely expressionless.

""You didn't love me, Bradley,"" she said softly, stepping cleanly around his outstretched fingers. ""You loved the gold. Now drown in it.""

The marshals moved in, providing immediate trauma care to keep Bradley alive for his trial, while Victoria was handcuffed and read her constitutional rights in silence.

Maddie approached the center of Vault 42. She leaned down to the retinal scanner. A blue laser swept across her eye.

Access Granted: Welcome, Heir Vance.

The central titanium safe hissed open. Inside lay no stacks of cash or offshore bonds. There was only a single velvet-lined wooden box containing her father’s pocket watch and an audio cassette labeled in his handwriting: For Maddie.

She picked up the box, pressing it gently against her heart. A single tear rolled down her cheek, washing away the last speck of harbor soot.

Christian walked up beside her, gently placing his hand over hers.

""It's over, Maddie,"" he said quietly. ""Your father's legacy is secure.""

They walked out of the vault together, climbing the stone stairs and emerging onto the windswept bluff of Blackwood Island. The storm clouds had broken apart, torn open by the morning wind.

Across the bay, the golden dawn broke across the metropolitan skyline, bathing the harbor, the ships, and the waking city in brilliant, untamed light.

Maddie breathed in the clean, salt air. She wasn't the victim who had fallen into that swimming pool. She was the architect of her own kingdom, standing beside the only man who had seen her fire and refused to look away."
