Chapter 14 - The Counter-Trap
Friday midnight arrived with quiet precision. Inside a luxury condominium three floors above the city marina, Ray sat before three high-definition monitors, watching an encrypted progress bar climb steadily toward completion. A smug grin played across his lips.
He had spent months playing the innocent corporate bystander, letting Marcus take the fall while he prepared to deliver Vanguard’s crowning technology to an overseas consortium for a fifty-million-dollar payout.
Transfer Complete, the screen flashed in bright green text.
Ray let out a breath of triumph. He inserted an external hardware drive, copied the decrypted files, and immediately began packaging his passport and bearer bonds into an aluminum briefcase. He grabbed his coat, walked out to his private elevator, and descended to the underground parking garage.
As the elevator doors parted, Ray stepped out into the concrete garage—and directly into the blinding glare of six tactical floodlights.
“Raymond Vance, put your hands above your head!” a voice barked through a megaphone.
A dozen federal marshals and local detectives moved in, weapons drawn. Ray dropped his briefcase in shock, throwing his hands in the air as two agents forced him against a concrete pillar, snapping handcuffs around his wrists.
From behind the lead police cruiser, Maya stepped forward into the perimeter lights, accompanied by Julian.
“What is this?” Ray stammered, sweat pouring down his face. “I haven’t done anything! I’m a private citizen!”

Maya held up a tablet displaying the forensic logs. “You just initiated an illegal transfer of classified, dual-use green-energy technology across international borders, Ray. Only, Tara swapped the files. You didn't download my hydrogen schematics. You downloaded a complete, timestamped confession of every financial crime you committed alongside Marcus, signed with your own digital signature.”
Ray’s knees gave out, his face turning the color of ash as the marshals dragged him away.
