Chapter 6 - Shadows on the Dune

Rain lashed against the windows of the Oregon cottage as twilight descended, turning the ocean into an expanse of churning slate. Inside, Maya paced the timber floorboards, gently burping Clara against her shoulder. Julian had left two hours earlier to file the preliminary protective injunction at the county courthouse, leaving Maya with explicit instructions to keep the heavy perimeter blinds drawn.

The isolation was deliberate, but tonight it felt suffocating. Every creak of the cedar siding under the howling wind sounded like an approaching step.

Maya laid Clara gently in the portable bassinet by the stove, tucking the blanket securely around her tiny torso. She walked to the kitchen counter, picked up the burner phone Julian had provided, and checked the encrypted dashboard. The court had granted temporary emergency sole custody based on the domestic abandonment evidence and financial coercion filings. On paper, she was completely insulated.

Yet a primal instinct warned her that paper was useless against madness.

Suddenly, the power cut out. The comforting hum of the refrigerator died, and the soft amber lamp beside the rocking chair went dark. Only the faint, flickering orange glow from the glass door of the woodstove remained to illuminate the room.

Maya froze. Her hand moved instinctively toward the kitchen drawer where she had placed a heavy tactical flashlight and a can of industrial pepper gel.

Outside, gravel crunched beneath the weight of heavy tires. Through the narrow gap in the drawn curtain, Maya saw headlights cut through the driving rain. A dark luxury rental sedan idled at the foot of her driveway, its engine purring with low, menacing vibration. The driver’s side door opened. A tall figure stepped out into the deluge, stepping purposefully through the mud toward her front porch.
