Chapter 4 - The Clean Slate
Two hundred miles north, the morning sun broke over a modest cedar-shingle cottage nestled between dense pine trees along the Oregon coastline. The air was salt-laced and bitter cold, but inside the cottage, a cast-iron stove radiated steady heat.
Maya sat in a worn rocking chair by the bay window, swaddling little Clara in a soft wool blanket. Her body ached with deep, postpartum exhaustion, yet her mind had never been sharper. On the reclaimed wood dining table sat an open laptop, connected to an encrypted satellite network.
Opposite her sat Julian Cole, an attorney whose quiet demeanor concealed the sharpest forensic mind in corporate law. Julian closed a thick manila folder and slid a sleek black coffee mug across the table.
“The board panicked within twenty minutes of the press release,” Julian said softly, mindful of the sleeping infant. “The files you preserved from his server completely validate your original patents. Marcus didn’t just sideline you, Maya; he stole your entire green-energy framework and presented it as his own intellectual property to secure Apex’s venture capital.”
Maya looked down at Clara, whose small chest rose and fell in rhythmic peace. “I never cared about his vanity. But Clara’s future will not be funded on stolen pride or his crumbs.”
“The SEC has already issued a subpoena for his personal accounts,” Julian continued. “By noon today, every asset tied to the holding company will be temporarily frozen. But you need to understand something, Maya: a cornered predator is the most dangerous kind. He won’t go to prison quietly. He knows you’re the only witness who holds the original cryptographic keys.”
