Chapter 3 - The Ghost at the Desk
Marcus charged through the fourth-floor maternity ward, his tailored suit wrinkled, his tie loosened at his collar. Sweat glistened at his temples. The message in the vault had unraveled him: You built your empire on a forged blueprint, Marcus. Let’s see how it stands without the foundation.
He needed to see her. He needed to demand an explanation, to retrieve the drive, to assert control. He reached the nurses’ station, slamming a flat palm onto the counter.
“Maya Sterling. Where is she? I’m her husband.”
The head nurse looked up slowly, adjusting her glasses with unflinching calm. “Sir, lower your voice. This is a restricted intensive recovery unit.”
“I don’t care about your rules,” Marcus snapped, his voice rough. “She checked in here three hours ago. I know she did; her medical profile links to our private family insurance.”
The nurse typed something into her terminal. Her brow furrowed as she scanned the monitor, then shifted her gaze to two approaching security guards. “Mr. Sterling, there is no patient registered under that name.”
“That’s impossible!” Marcus barked, reaching over the partition. “Look again! Maya Sterling!”
“I am looking, sir,” she replied smoothly. “The patient in Room 412 discharged herself fifteen minutes ago. She signed an AMA waiver and declined all visitor contact.”
Marcus felt the room spin. “Discharged? She just had a baby! She can’t walk out!”
“A private medical transport team handled her departure, along with her newborn daughter,” the nurse said, her tone devoid of sympathy. “Furthermore, an emergency restraining order was filed electronically via her legal counsel at midnight. You are currently in violation of the perimeter mandate.”

The lead security guard placed a firm hand on Marcus’s shoulder. “Step back, sir. Now.”
Marcus shrugged the hand off in fury, backing away slowly. As he pulled out his phone to call his chief legal advisor, the screen lit up with an incoming alert from his company’s board of directors. The headline sent ice cascading down his spine: Apex Holdings CEO Under Federal Scrutiny Following Whistleblower Leak.
