Chapter 10 - Cultivating RootsSummer arrived with long, golden afternoons. Clara received the news that her therapeutic garden design had won the city’s municipal renewal grant. The local government allocated funding to transform an abandoned parcel of land downtown into the "Haven Green Community Park."

Clara was hired as the lead junior planner on the project.

Her life expanded beyond the quiet walls of her apartment. She coordinated with contractors, surveyed plant nurseries, and oversaw the excavation of soil that had lain neglected under concrete rubble for decades.

Nora, now crawling and laughing with boisterous energy, became a familiar presence at the on-site trailer. The construction crew, rough-hewn men and women in high-vis vests, competed to see who could make Nora giggle during lunch breaks.

One afternoon, while inspecting the drainage grade, Clara noticed a mother sitting on a nearby bench with two young children. The woman had dark circles under her eyes and an unmistakable, vigilant tension in her shoulders—the silent signature of someone living in fear.

Clara walked over, carrying two extra bottles of cold juice from the site trailer. She didn't pry; she didn't ask questions. She simply sat down on the adjacent bench and offered the drinks with a warm, unassuming smile.

"It gets easier," Clara said softly, looking out over the turning earth. "The beginning is the hardest part. But soil can be cleared, no matter how much junk was dumped on it."

The woman looked at Clara, her eyes softening as she accepted the juice. "Did it take you long?"

"A year," Clara said. "A year and a lot of help. Take your time. You don't have to carry it all today."
