Chapter 5 - Shadows at the PerimeterA week later, the autumn air turned sharp. Clara began helping Elena in the shelter’s communal greenhouse, potting hardy winter succulents. Working her hands into the black soil grounded her, reconnecting her to a tangible world where life grew rather than eroded.

Around noon, a commotion broke out near the front gate.
Clara froze, the trowel slipping from her fingers. From the window of the greenhouse, she saw a sleek black sedan idling at the visitor intercom. A woman with dyed blonde hair and an expensive camel-hair coat was arguing with the shelter’s security guard.
It was Victoria, Marcus’s older sister.
Elena immediately stepped into the greenhouse, gently pulling the curtain shut. "Stay inside, Clara. Security is already handling it."
Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs. Victoria’s voice carried faintly over the breeze: "I just need five minutes with her! This is a family matter! Clara is lying, she’s setting him up!"
Clara expected panic to overwhelm her. She braced for the old, suffocating urge to crawl into a corner and apologize for existing. But instead, as she looked down at her hands stained with clean earth, a cold clarity crystallized within her.
Victoria was not a figure of authority; she was an emissary of Marcus's desperation. They were scrambling because their power had vanished the moment the truth stepped into the light.
Within three minutes, local police cruisers pulled into the driveway. Victoria was instructed to leave the premises immediately or face arrest for violating the restraining order’s third-party contact clause.

As the sedan sped away, Elena placed a cup of hot water with lemon in Clara’s hand. "Are you alright?"
"I was terrified," Clara admitted, her voice steadying. "And then I realized... they have nothing left to threaten me with except words."
