Chapter 13 - Haven GreenOn an unseasonably warm afternoon in May, Haven Green Community Park officially opened its gates to the public.

What had once been an abandoned industrial lot was now an emerald oasis in the heart of the city. Winding pathways of crushed stone wound through native meadows of black-eyed Susans and wild indigo. High, gently sloping earth mounds absorbed traffic noise, creating a sanctuary of quiet birdsong and running water.

Clara stood beside Nora, who was now a vibrant toddler running across the grass with untamed joy. Nora’s laughter floated over the splash of the central fountain.

The mayor cut the ceremonial ribbon, but when he turned to hand Clara the ceremonial shears, she shook her head gently and called forward Elena, Dr. Mercer, and several women from the New Dawn shelter.

"This park wasn't built by an individual," Clara told the gathered crowd. "It was built by community. It’s dedicated to anyone who ever thought they would never find a quiet place to breathe."

As the crowd dispersed to explore the grounds, Clara sat on a cedar bench near the reflective pool. Nora waddled over, dropping a yellow dandelion into Clara’s lap with a proud grin.

"Flower for Mama," Nora declared.

"Thank you, my love," Clara said, tucking the blossom behind her ear.

She looked at her reflection in the still water. The dark shadows under her eyes were gone. The posture of defensive defeat had been replaced by the easy confidence of a woman rooted in her own life.
