Chapter 4 - Paper Trails of ControlRecovery was not an effortless slope; it was an uneven, exhausting climb. Within a week, the adrenaline began to clear, replaced by the crushing exhaustion of hypervigilance. Every sudden clatter of dishes in the communal kitchen made Clara jump. Every car door slamming outside triggered an involuntary flinch.

On Thursday morning, Clara sat in the shelter’s legal clinic across from David Thorne, a pro bono attorney with silvering hair and an unflinching sense of justice. He laid out several bank statements, mortgage deeds, and vehicle titles.
"Marcus was thorough," David noted, studying the paperwork. "He took your name off the joint accounts within six months of your marriage. He forged your signature on power of attorney documents and refinanced your grandmother's house to secure a personal business loan."
"He told me I was bad with numbers," Clara said, her voice small. "He said that after my mother passed, my grief made me incompetent. After a while, I started believing that I couldn't even manage a grocery list without making a catastrophic mistake."
David leaned forward, tapping a finger on the ledger. "Financial isolation is legal warfare, Clara. But he got sloppy. He transferred assets while already under scrutiny for an ethics investigation at his firm. The digital trail from your phone’s background backup recorded him admitting to altering those signatures."
Clara watched David organize the documents into distinct piles. What Marcus had framed as absolute dominance was revealed to be a fragile house of cards held together by intimidation and fraud.

"Will I have to see him?" she asked.
"Not until the preliminary hearing," David replied. "And even then, Clara, you will sit behind a shield of protective orders. But make no mistake: your voice is the evidence that seals his fate."
