Chapter 6 - The Dawn of NoraTwo days before Thanksgiving, under a canopy of gray skies that threatened snow, Clara’s contractions began.

Unlike the chaotic nightmares she had envisioned while trapped in the master bedroom on Elm Street, her labor was accompanied by calm professionals. Elena drove her to St. Jude’s, holding her hand during every tightening wave of pain. Detective Lin arrived off-duty, sitting in the waiting area to ensure hospital security maintained a strict visitor perimeter.

At 4:18 AM, Nora arrived into the world.

Her cry was sharp, clear, and unyielding—a small, furious declaration of life. When the nurses placed the swaddled newborn onto Clara’s bare chest, the world shrank to the perimeter of that hospital bed.

Nora had a fringe of dark hair, translucent eyelashes, and miniature fingers that instantly curled around Clara’s thumb.

"Look at you," Clara whispered, tears falling into the folds of the flannel blanket. "You never have to be afraid. Not for a single second of your life."

Dr. Mercer checked Nora’s vitals and beamed. "A healthy seven pounds, four ounces. Strong lungs. She takes after her mother."

As Clara held her daughter, the ghost of Marcus that had haunted her subconscious seemed to retreat into insignificance. The man who had spent three years diminishing her held no claim over this child, nor over the woman Clara had become. In that quiet recovery room, mother and daughter formed a sovereign sanctuary.
