Chapter 6 - Shadows on the Asphalt

The rain beat against the SUV's reinforced windshield like gravel as Julian navigated the slick city grid. The city streets were nearly empty at two in the morning, giving their pursuers a clean line of sight. The two black sedans maintained a steady distance of fifty yards, matching every turn, their headlights cutting through the heavy mist.
""They're not trying to pass us,"" Julian observed through gritted teeth, his eyes scanning the rear-view mirror. ""They're herding us.""
""Where?"" Catherine asked, her arms curled protectively around Leo. The baby's skin was still dangerously hot, his shallow breaths rattling like dry leaves in the quiet cabin. ""Julian, he’s getting colder in the extremities. We don't have time for this!""
""Three miles,"" Julian said, his voice tight with controlled adrenaline. ""Marcus runs a private practice off an old warehouse dock. Once we're inside, Eleanor can’t touch us.""
As they crossed the industrial bridge spanning the black waters of the canal, the trailing sedan suddenly surged forward, pulling alongside their left flank. Catherine gasped as the heavy vehicle swerved violently, clipping Julian’s side mirror and sending sparks flying across the wet pavement.
Julian fought the steering wheel, keeping the heavy SUV steady on the slick metal grid of the bridge. ""Brace yourself!""
The second vehicle roared up behind them, slamming into their rear bumper with bone-jarring force. The impact threw Catherine forward, the seatbelt catching her chest painfully as she buried Leo into her jacket. The baby gave a weak, pathetic cry that tore straight through Julian’s chest.
Something snapped inside Julian. The cool, calculating corporate prince disappeared, replaced by the primal fury of a protective father. He slammed on the brakes for a split second, letting the flanking sedan overshoot them by half a car length, then wrenched the wheel hard to the left, driving his reinforced front bull-bar directly into the sedan’s rear quarter panel.

The pursuit car spun out of control, tires screeching wildly against the wet metal grating before violently crashing into the bridge's concrete barrier. Smoke billowed from its crushed engine block.
Julian didn't wait to see if the driver survived. He hammered the accelerator, leaving the second car trapped behind the wreckage. Within four minutes, they slid into a dark alleyway behind a converted brick warehouse. A steel roll-up door opened just wide enough for the SUV to squeeze inside before clattering shut, plunging them into the safety of the shadows.
