Chapter 9 - The Father's Legacy

Deep within the reinforced basement of Marcus’s warehouse sat a heavy cast-iron safe, coated in decades of dust and grease. Julian entered a seven-digit sequence on the mechanical dial before turning the brass key. With a heavy groan of steel, the door swung open.

Inside lay a single leather-bound binder and a velvet-lined jewelry box. Julian lifted the ledger carefully, blowing off the fine layer of dust.

""What is that?"" Catherine asked, standing in the doorway with Leo securely cradled in a warm fleece wrap against her chest.

""My father didn't die of a heart attack, Catherine,"" Julian said quietly, his thumb tracing the embossed initials on the leather cover: Arthur Vance. ""He died forty-eight hours after drafting a revised corporate charter that would have stripped Eleanor of all administrative control. She claimed he was manic, had him admitted to a private facility, and within two days, he was gone. But before they took him, he gave this to Marcus's father.""

Julian opened the ledger. Inside were handwritten bank manifests, offshore routing numbers, and certified transcripts of Eleanor’s clandestine financial maneuvers. For over thirty years, Eleanor had been siphoning Vance capital into shell companies controlled by the Sterling cartel—Victoria's family.

""This isn't just a corporate dispute,"" Julian whispered, the horror dawning on him. ""Victoria’s family didn't want a merger to expand Vance Global. They needed the merger to conceal a forty-billion-dollar deficit in their offshore shipping fleets. My mother sold our family company to save her own skin.""

""If you reveal this,"" Catherine warned, her voice trembling, ""she faces federal prison. She is your mother, Julian. Will you really destroy her?""

Julian closed the ledger with a sharp, echoing snap. The cold detachment had returned to his eyes, hardened by the memory of his infant son shivering on a wet curb while his mother watched from a heated limousine.

""She ceased being my mother the moment she ordered those men to run us off the bridge,"" Julian stated coldly. ""Marcus, call the best tailor in the city. And find Catherine a gown fit for the mistress of the house. We have an eight o'clock appointment with destiny.""
