Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Violence

The fluorescent lights hummed above the polished vinyl floor of the athletic equipment room, casting flat shadows around metal shelves stacked with blue tumbling mats. In the doorway stood Emilio, black patent-leather jacket gleaming under the tubes, unbuttoned down his chest to reveal taut, sun-browned skin. The semi-automatic pistol in his right hand did not tremble. It was leveled directly at Toby, whose varsity jacket bore a stained 'C' patch over his chest. Between Toby’s knees lay Maya, her pale cheek pressed to the cold linoleum, curls spilled like dark honey across the floor.
"Step aside," Emilio said again. His tone carried no anger, only the chilling efficiency of a hired professional who regarded murder as inventory control.
Toby didn't move. His right wrist, wrapped in dirty gauze from an earlier struggle in the corridor, throbbed with every pulse. His knees bit into the floor. He could feel Maya’s shallow, ragged gasps through the denim of his trousers. Beneath him, she tried to dig her fingernails into the slick floor tiles to pull herself backward, but her strength had leaked out somewhere between the parking lot and the locker room.
"Let her go, Emilio," Toby rasped, his voice scraping against dry terror. "She doesn't know where the ledger is. It was her father who hid the files, not her. Take me instead."
Emilio’s dark eyes flicked downward for a fraction of a second, settling on Maya’s upturned face. Her lips parted, exhaling a faint, trembling syllable: his name. The recognition wasn't a shock; it was an execution sentence. Emilio had grown up three doors down from her family on Mercer Street before vanishing into the cartel’s logistics network eight years ago. To leave a witness who knew his birth name meant his employers would eliminate him before the week ended.
"Her father died in federal custody two hours ago," Emilio replied softly, taking a single measured pace forward. The sole of his shoe squeaked sharply against the wax. "Which means whatever he had now belongs to whoever reaches the safe deposit box first. The key was mailed to this school address under her alias."
Maya’s eyes flared wide with sickening comprehension. She had picked up an unmarked padded envelope from the front office that morning during homeroom, tossing it into her locker without opening it. She thought it was college recruitment literature.
Emilio raised the barrel two inches, centering the sights between Toby’s shoulder blades. "Stand up, Toby. I’ll make yours quick if you don't make me shoot through you."
Toby shifted his weight forward, deliberately shielding Maya’s exposed neck. "Run, Maya," he whispered.
"I won't tell anyone, Emilio," Maya pleaded from the floor, tears cutting tracks through dust on her cheek. "I swear to God, I'll walk away. Just take the key."
"You don't understand the contract," Emilio said, his finger taking up the slack on the trigger. "The payout requires no loose ends."

Outside in the hall, a fire alarm abruptly shrieked—a deafening, strobe-lit wail triggered by an unknown hand. Emilio’s gaze snapped toward the hallway entrance for a split second. Toby lunged. He shoved off the floor, head low, driving his shoulder straight into Emilio’s midsection. The gun barked with a concussive roar in the enclosed space, deafening both boys, the bullet chewing a splintering furrow into the concrete wall behind Maya.
As Toby and Emilio crashed into the metal shelving, bringing rows of iron weights tumbling down, Maya scrambled backward on hands and knees. Her fingers brushed against the open doorway just as a second shadowy figure stepped into the hall.
