Chapter 5 - Sub-Level Zero

The world detonated in ringing, white static. Toby’s vision flared with blinding yellow sparks as the shockwave tossed him sideways against the lab’s chemical storage lockers. His ears screamed with high-pitched feedback, drowning out the immediate burst of gunfire that followed.

Through the blazing haze, Emilio was already firing. The suppressed submachine gun chattered in short, disciplined bursts. Emilio fired from the hip while sliding across the slick linoleum, using an upturned oak desk as mobile cover. A tactical operative in the doorway caught two rounds in the chest plate, staggering back into the hallway with a grunt of compressed air.

Maya seized Toby’s letterman jacket, hauling him toward the metal hatch behind the fume hood. Vance was already there, pulling the iron latch upward with all her strength. The narrow steel door creaked open, revealing a vertical ladder plunging down into pitch-black maintenance tunnels.

"Down! Go!" Toby yelled, his hearing slowly returning in distorted waves.

Vance disappeared down the rungs first. Maya followed, her sneakers clattering against the cold steel. Toby turned to Emilio, who was emptying his magazine into the smoke-choked entrance to suppress the approaching squad.

"Emilio, move!" Toby shouted.

Emilio discarded the empty magazine, pulled the pin on a flash grenade stripped from the dead operative, and rolled it into the hall. He turned and sprinted toward the hatch just as the secondary flash detonated, shaking the drywall and showering them in plaster dust. Emilio dove into the chute feet-first, his boots slamming into the rungs. Toby pulled the heavy steel hatch shut behind them, slamming the iron locking bar home just as a volley of heavy rifle rounds punched through the upper sheet metal.

They fell into the quiet gloom of sub-level zero.

The air beneath the school was freezing, thick with the smell of rusted cast iron, boiler steam, and damp earth. Overhead, banks of thick electrical conduits hummed with high voltage, running parallel along the low concrete ceiling.

"Keep moving," Emilio ordered, landing heavily on the gravel floor. He adjusted his night-vision optic, sweeping the beam down the long, narrow corridor. "That latch won't hold them for more than three minutes. They have hydraulic spreaders."

"The main utility hub is past the boiler room," Maya whispered, clutching the memory card tightly inside her jacket pocket. "If we trip the emergency fire override, the magnetic exterior doors unlock automatically by federal safety law."

"And it alerts their perimeter units outside," Vance warned, shivering in her damp clothes. "They'll be waiting at every exit."

"Then we don't use the doors," Toby said, wiping blood from his eyebrow. "The old stormwater culvert empties into the creek behind the football bleachers. It's overgrown with briars. They won't have vehicles stationed there."

Emilio cast a cold, evaluating glance at Toby. "You're smarter than you look for a varsity jock."

"I survived your first shot," Toby snapped back. "I learn fast."

They navigated the maze of steam pipes, ducking beneath low-hanging valves. But as they rounded the corner toward the boiler room, the hum of the electrical conduits suddenly died. Complete silence dropped over the tunnel.

Then, from the darkness ahead, came the unmistakable hum of an electric motor—a remote reconnaissance drone hovering at eye level, its crimson targeting sensor locking directly onto Maya’s chest.
