Chapter 7 - Fractured Bloodlines

The server fans roared in the small room, their cyclic whine filling the suffocating silence between Emilio’s words. Toby didn't flinch, though the cold iron barrel of the submachine gun was less than six inches from his forehead. He gripped the heavy crowbar at his hip, knowing full well he couldn't swing it before Emilio could pull the trigger.
"You really think they let you walk out of here with that drive, Emilio?" Toby asked, his voice steady despite the adrenaline surging through his veins. "You saw the monitors. The local cops are escorting Apex contractors. If you show up at their perimeter with that card, they shoot you twice in the head, toss you in an incinerator, and write the whole thing off as a gang conflict."
"I have extraction protocols they don't know about," Emilio replied, his finger tightening incrementally on the curved steel. "I don't need to negotiate with local muscle. I take the data directly to the broker in Chicago."
"He's lying, Emilio," Maya said, stepping in front of the console monitor, her hand resting flat against the screen. "Look at the screen. Look at the tactical command van parked across from the football field."
Emilio’s eyes cut sideways for a fraction of a second toward the security feed. On the monochrome monitor, a tall man in a tailored overcoat had stepped out of the black Mercedes trailing the armored vans. The man wore a gold signet ring on his right hand, visible even through the low-resolution digital feed as he held a radio to his jaw.
Emilio’s jaw clenched. The micro-expression of absolute calm he had maintained all night shattered, replaced by a dark, simmering rage.
"Donovan," Emilio whispered.
"You know him?" Vance asked from the corner.
"He's the regional handler who gave me this assignment," Emilio said, his gun lowering an inch. "He told me this was an independent job. A private family dispute. He said nothing about municipal involvement. He said nothing about Apex."
"He set you up as the patsy, Emilio," Maya said, pressing her advantage. Her voice was steady, cutting through the hum of the server banks. "You were supposed to kill me, take the fall for a school shooting, and let Apex clean up the evidence when they 'neutralized' the shooter. That's why they sent a hit team after you the second you entered the building. You were never meant to leave sub-level zero."
Emilio stared at the monitor. He saw the cold arithmetic of the trap now. His employers hadn't just double-crossed him; they had written his obituary before he even picked up his weapon that morning.
Toby lowered his crowbar slightly. "We have one way out. The storm culvert leads under the bleachers, directly beneath Donovan's command vehicle. We can't outrun their perimeter, but we can hit their command center before they realize we're out of the basement."
"Why would I help you take down Donovan?" Emilio hissed, his eyes hardening again.
May you like
"Because the ledger on this card has Donovan's offshore bank details," Maya replied, holding the small drive between her thumb and forefinger. "Without my fingerprint to decrypt the master volume, it's just garbage code. You want your payout, Emilio? You get us through that culvert alive."
Before Emilio could answer, the steel door to the server room buckled inward with a violent crash. A heavy hydraulic ram punched through the center plate, shearing the hinges off the concrete frame in a spray of sparks.
