Chapter 9 - The Perimeter Shadow

The smell of wet earth and exhaust fumes drifted down through the iron slots. Above them, the wooden stadium bleachers creaked rhythmically under the weight of patrolling tactical operatives. Through the gaps in the weathered planks, Toby could see the silhouettes of two snipers moving along the upper press box, their long-barreled rifles equipped with infrared optics sweeping the perimeter fence.

Emilio sat against the curved concrete wall of the culvert, his face slick with cold sweat as he wrapped a strip of torn lining from his jacket around his bleeding ribs. The makeshift bandage turned dark red within seconds, but his hands remained precise, knotting the cloth tight with a sharp pull that made his jaw twitch.

"Two guards by the Mercedes," Emilio whispered, peering up through the grate with his single functional night-vision optic. "Donovan is in the back seat on a satellite phone. The local sheriff is leaning against the hood, smoking. They think we’re still pinned in the boiler room."

"The explosion bought us time," Maya said, shivering uncontrollably as she held the micro-SD card tightly in her closed fist. "They think we died in the server collapse."

"Only for five minutes," Emilio countered coldly. "Apex teams carry thermal sensors. Once the residual heat from the thermite cools down and they don't find our charred bones, Donovan will know we hit the drains. He’ll order a perimeter saturation strike. That means white phosphorus in the storm drains."

Vance pulled her soaked hair back from her face, her eyes wide with mounting dread. "We can't take on an entire squad with one half-empty submachine gun."

"We don't take on the squad," Toby said, studying the underside of the Mercedes. The vehicle was parked directly over an asphalt drainage depression, its fuel tank barely four feet from the edge of the iron maintenance grate. "We take Donovan. He's their payroll. If Donovan goes down, the mercenaries have no guarantee of payment. They don't fight for free."

"And the sheriff?" Maya asked.

"Sheriff Lawson is a coward," Toby said, his voice hardening with memory. "He took kickbacks from my uncle's transport company for ten years. The moment gunfire starts coming his way without Apex backing him up, he'll run for his cruiser."

Emilio let out a dry, humorless chuckle that ended in a sharp cough. "You're planning an ambush against a hardened contractor using a crowbar and an empty magazine."

"You have one full clip left in that sidearm," Toby noted, pointing to the secondary pistol strapped to Emilio’s thigh rig. "And I have this."

Toby held up a heavy brass valve key he had unhooked from the boiler room wall before they dropped into the culvert. It was three feet of solid, forged steel with a T-handle—essentially a war hammer.

"We pop the grate behind the rear bumper," Emilio said, the tactical calculus settling in his eyes. "I take out the sheriff before he draws. You take the guard on the driver’s side. Maya, the second Donovan’s door opens, you get inside that vehicle and lock the armor plates. It's an armored B7 chassis—bulletproof against anything short of an anti-materiel rifle."

"What about me?" Vance asked, determined despite her shaking frame.

"You stay in the drain until the car is secure," Emilio ordered. "If this goes sideways, you crawl south toward the creek. Don't look back."

Emilio reached up, slowly pressing his palms against the underside of the iron grate. He tested the weight. It lifted an inch without a sound, muffled by the low rumble of the Mercedes' idling V8 engine.

He glanced at Toby, then at Maya. "On three," Emilio breathed.

Before he could whisper the count, the heavy boots above them stopped. A flashlight beam snapped on, illuminating the spaces between the iron bars directly over their faces.

A voice spoke from above: "Donovan. We've got fresh water displaced at drain exit four. They're under the bleachers."
