Chapter 4 - Dark Harvest

The darkness in the biology lab smelled of sulfur, copper, and dust. Above them, the tinny clatter of sheet metal echoed as a ventilation grate dropped to the floor with a loud clang. Two beams of green tactical laser light pierced the black air, cutting sharp diagonals through the suspended powder.
"Sweep team," Emilio muttered, his voice barely a breath. For the first time, a note of tension sharpened his tone. He forgot about Maya and Toby, melting into the shadows beneath the heavy central lab counter.
"Get down," Toby whispered, dragging Maya and Vance beneath an oak demonstration desk near the rear blackboard.
A figure clad in matte-black tactical armor dropped silently from the ceiling opening, landing in a fluid crouch. The operative carried a suppressed submachine gun, a night-vision monocle glowing pale green over his right eye. On his chest rig was an embroidered patch—a stylized predatory falcon over a silver globe: Apex Global Logistics, the multi-billion-dollar private contractor her father had investigated.
The operative moved with chilling precision, scanning the rows of workstations. He didn't issue commands. He wasn't here to make arrests or negotiate; he was here to sterilize the room.
Suddenly, a shadow erupted from beneath the side counter. Emilio moved like a phantom. He didn't use a firearm; he closed the distance in two strides, driving his utility knife upward beneath the operative’s Kevlar collar with surgical accuracy. The operative let out a wet gasp, struggling to raise his submachine gun, but Emilio twisted the blade and used the man's momentum to slam him down onto the concrete floor.
A muffled spray of suppressed gunfire tore into the ceiling tiles, raining fiberglass insulation down on them. Emilio pinned the twitching operative, tore the night-vision optic from the helmet, and strapped it to his own head. He snatched the submachine gun, racking the bolt with a sharp mechanical snap.
"One down," Emilio whispered into the dark, his voice now amplified by the tactical headset he had stripped from the body. "Three more in the hallway. They aren't here for the card. They're here to burn the school down to erase the paper trail."
Maya stepped out from beneath the desk, her voice shaking but resolute. "If they want to burn it, the server room in the basement controls the sprinkler main and the security overrides. If we reach it, we can unlock the exterior exits."
Emilio turned toward her, the green optic glowing ominously on his brow. "You think you can make it to the basement with three squads clearing the floors?"
"We know the utility tunnels," Toby said, rising beside Maya, clutching his bruised ribs. "You have the guns. We have the layout. You want to survive this night, Emilio? You work with us until we're outside."
Emilio paused, the heavy barrel of the submachine gun pointed at the floor between them. He weighed the odds with cold mathematics: solitary survival against an unknown number of clean-up contractors versus using two students to navigate locked corridors.

"We move through the maintenance shaft behind the fume hood," Emilio conceded coldly. "If either of you slows me down, I leave you behind."
Before they could reach the shaft, the classroom door exploded inward with a flashbang grenade. A blinding wall of white light and concussive thunder slammed them across the floor, deafening their ears as a second fireteam stormed through the shattered entrance.
