Chapter 15 - The Sterling Bloodline

Claire gasped, dropping the letter onto the marble floor as if it were burning coals. Her breath turned ragged, her eyes wild with agony.
""What does she mean?"" Claire cried, turning to Pierce. ""Dad, Leo is my son! Derek wanted to steal his inheritance, but Leo is my baby!""
Pierce picked up the letter, his face an impenetrable mask. He walked over to Claire and gently wiped a tear from her cheek.
""Leo is your son, Claire,"" Pierce said gently. ""That will never change. But your mother was a master manipulator. She knew the terms of my father's living trust: if any Sterling child is born outside a verified genetic lineage, the family empire diverts entirely to a secondary board of trustees.""
Marcus stepped forward with an envelope containing the hospital records secured from the private medical checkup at the Four Seasons earlier that evening.
""Mr. Sterling,"" Marcus said, opening the seal. ""The pediatric team ran an expedited genetic panel on Leo during the treatment.""
Claire closed her eyes, clutching her baby so tightly that Leo let out a small, soft whimper. She was terrified that her mother’s final poisonous dart would shatter the only safety she had left.
Marcus read the official report, his eyes widening. A slow, genuine smile spread across his face.
""The test confirms Claire is the biological mother,"" Marcus stated clearly. ""And Derek Vance is completely excluded as the father.""
Claire looked up, stunned. ""What?""
""Derek fabricated the entire paternity claim,"" Marcus explained. ""He forged the birth certificate while Claire was hospitalized under sedation after delivery. Leo is the biological son of Julian Vance—Derek's estranged older brother, who died serving in the French Special Forces.""
A profound silence descended over the vault. Julian had been Claire’s true love, a man of honor who had tragically perished before he could learn of Claire's pregnancy. Derek had swooped in under the guise of family duty, weaving an elaborate web of lies to steal his brother’s legacy.
Pierce looked down at the infant sleeping soundly in Claire’s arms. The boy’s hazel eyes opened slowly, looking up at Pierce with pure innocence—the exact eyes of Julian Vance.
""Eleanor thought this would break us,"" Pierce said, tearing the handwritten letter into a dozen pieces and letting them fall to the floor. ""She thought greed would make me abandon you.""
Pierce wrapped his strong arms around both Claire and Leo, holding them against his heart.

""The townhouse is yours,"" Pierce declared softly. ""The accounts are restored. And from this day forward, Leo bears the name Sterling. Tomorrow, the world learns that our family is whole again.""
Claire buried her face into her father’s chest, finally weeping not out of fear or betrayal, but out of absolute freedom. Outside, the bells of Notre Dame rang through the morning mist, heralding the sunrise over Paris."
